A highly respected and tenacious former Wayne County prosecutor, who prosecuted many high-profile cases, has been picked by the Michigan Attorney General to investigate the FBI’s fatal shooting last October of a Detroit Imam during a raid, the Detroit Free Press reported Monday.

Attorney General Mike Cox picked former Wayne County Prosecutor Doug Baker as an assistant special attorney general to look into the death of Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah, who was shot 20 times by federal agents during an arrest in a stolen goods sting, the Free Press reported.

The FBI has said the Abdullah had shot and killed a dog before agents opened fire. It insists it did nothing improper.

John Sellek, a spokesman for the Attorney General, told the Free Press that Baker will determine whether the FBI violated any laws during the incident.

Islamic groups have raised questions about the shooting, which the  Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has declined to get involved in, the Free Press reported.

It also reported that the FBI has forwarded its findings in the shooting to the Attorney General.
