FBI Agent Who Threatened to Kill Wife and Head of Dallas FBI Pleads Guilty

By Allan Lengel

A former FBI Dallas FBI agent pleaded guilty Wednesday in a case in which he was charged with plotting to kill his estranged wife and his boss, the head of the Dallas FBI, Robert Casey Jr., the Dallas Morning News reported.

Carlos Ortiz Jr., 49, pleaded to retaliating against a federal official. Ortiz’s estranged wife is an analyst with the FBI.

Casey suspended Ortiz without pay in May after Ortiz’s wife accused him of domestic violence, the newspaper reported. They have a 6-year-old son.

Authorities alleged that in August Ortiz spoke to a friend by phone, who is a licensed firearms dealer and said he was looking for a .50 caliber rifle, which are used by military snipers, the Dallas Morning News reported.

He also made threats against Casey and his wife and accused them of having an affair, something FBI officials denied, the Morning News reported.

The friend notified the FBI, the newspaper reported. Casey fired Ortiz on Aug. 25.
