Immigrants Risk Drowning to Reach U.S. As Land Routes Are Tightened

As the U.S. continues to tighten land routes along the Mexican border, immigrants are increasingly risking their lives to reach the country by water, the Orange County Register reports.

Immigrants pay up to $9,000 to make the dangerous journey from Baja to the Southern California coast, according to the Register.

Since 2008, the number of apprehensions tripled along the Pacific Ocean.

In just the first 10 months of this fiscal year, officials apprehended 558 people along the coastline from San Diego to San Luis Obispo counties, according to the Register
