Defense: Mobster “Whitey” Bulger Was Never an FBI Informant

Mobster and suspected serial killer “Whitey” Bulger was never an FBI informant, his attorneys said Wednesday, the Boston Herald reports.

“James Bulger was never an informant for the FBI or anyone else,” attorney J.W. Carney Jr. told reporters outside Boston federal courthouse. “We have never said in the courtroom that he was an informant. We have never filed any pleadings that said he was an informant. He wasn’t an informant.”

Bulger’s attorneys made the shocking declaration after a hearing to decide whether Bulger could claim immunity from prosecution for committing crimes, including murders.

Bulger’s attorneys have claimed he was immune to crimes because the feds gave him a license to commit crimes.

“To the extent there was a contract between Mr. Bulger and Mr. O’Sullivan, as a matter of law, a U.S. Attorney does not have the authority to authorize the killing of American citizens,” assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary Hafer said. “Any contract between Mr. Bulger and Mr. O’Sullivan to the extent it contemplated murder would be void as a matter of law.”
