Border Patrol Apprehensions Rise 13% But Remain Historically Low

Border Patrol apprehensions have increased 13% in the first six months of the fiscal year, the USA Today reports.

The increase over last year, however, doesn’t mean the border is incredibly busy. In fact, the number of apprehensions – 189,172 – is still near historic lows.

Does this mean the U.S. is on the verge of massive migration levels?

“No,” said Michelle Mittelstadt, communications director for the Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan Washington, D.C., think tank that studies worldwide migration causes and trends.

“The demographics (in Mexico) have changed: Fertility rates have dropped, there are fewer people of young age who are the likeliest to migrate, the economy is improving, educational attainment is improving.”
