In response, Houston officials are urging residents to ask for officials’ badges and credentials before taking orders, the Associated Press reports

Three days before clashes broke out during the deadly Charlottesville rally on Aug. 12, Homeland Security issued a warning to law enforcement about the high probability that the event would be “among the most violent to date” between white supremacists and anti-racists.

Politico reports that it obtained a copy of the Aug. 9 “law enforcement sensitive” assessment.

The warning by the DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis raises questions about law enforcement’s preparation for the violence that would erupt.

The report reminded authorities that similar protests involving white supremacists and anti-racist extremists turned violent.

“Anarchist extremists and white supremacist extremists online are calling on supporters to be prepared for or to instigate violence at the 12 August rally,” the assessment warned.

The report also indicated that a “probable” white supremacist had posted a “call to arms” online, saying “antifa must be destroyed.

“They predicted it,” one senior law enforcement analyst from another state said of the assessment. Each side was saying, “’All right everybody, go get your weapons, and we’re gonna go kick their asses.’ And that’s exactly what happened in Charlottesville.”

Aware that some undocumented immigrants want call for help from flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said he would help any immigrant who faces deportation as a result of requesting assistance.

“There is absolutely no reason” why anyone shouldn’t call for help, Turner said at a press conference, The Hill reports

“I and others will be the first ones to stand up with you,” said Turner. “If you need help and someone comes and they require help, and then for some reason, then somebody tries to deport them, I will represent them myself, okay?”

Turner encouraged immigrants to call for help if they need it.

“If you are in a stressful situation, I don’t care who you are, I don’t care what you’re religion is, I don’t care what your language is, you come and take advantage of every service that we have,” he said.

“If you’re in a stressful situation and you need help, you call us for help. We want you to call. There is absolutely no reason why anyone should not call okay?”

U.S. Custom and Border Protection and ICE said its “highest priorities” will be saving lives.

“Routine noncriminal immigration enforcement operations will not be conducted at evacuation sites, or assistance centers such as shelters or food banks,” the agencies said. “The laws will not be suspended, and we will be vigilant against any effort by criminals to exploit disruptions caused by the storm.”

Special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating whether Donald Trump tried to hide the purpose of a 2016 meeting between his son Donald Trump Jr. and a Kremlin-linked lawyers at Trump Tower.

The president initially denied knowledge of the meeting until it was revealed by the New York Times. The president helped his son draft a statement to address the meeting to the media.

“Even if Trump is not charged with a crime as a result of the statement, it could be useful to Mueller’s team to show Trump’s conduct to a jury that may be considering other charges,” an unidentified source told NBC.

Trump Jr. met with a Russian lawyer after she pledged to provide incriminating information about Hillary Clinton.

In early August, Mueller issued grand jury subpoenas related to the meeting.

The Hill: Secret Service Needs Protection from President Trump

The United States spends a lot of money protecting the life of the president. As the most powerful man in the nation and the leader of the free world, the investment is entirely appropriate. He is constantly at risk from those who would do him harm.

Regardless of whether we agree with a president’s political positions or style, the president’s life matters and should be protected. Our nation should provide sufficient resources to guard and protect the president, and treat with respect the Secret Service agents who daily put their own lives at risk to keep the president from harm.

When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, he was guarded by a single Washington policeman of questionable integrity with a less than stellar history of job performance. John Parker left his post outside of Lincoln’s box at Ford’s Theater shortly after intermission to go drinking at the saloon next door. Thus, when John Wilkes Booth approached Lincoln’s box from behind, the door to the box was guarded by only an empty chair, allowing Booth to fire the fatal shot without any resistance.

Ironically, Lincoln signed a bill on the day of his assassination creating the Secret Service, but their function then was limited to detecting counterfeiting of currency.

It wasn’t until the third American president tragically fell victim to assassination (William McKinley in 1901 – after James Garfield in 1881) that the role of the Secret Service was expanded to include protecting the president.

Since then, while there have been assassination attempts (Harry Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan), and countless threats against presidents, John F. Kennedy remains the only president assassinated while under Secret Service protection.

We live in a very different world from 1865 when a sole policeman was charged with protecting the president. And since Kennedy’s 1963 assassination, the risks to the president have monumentally increased and requires a larger and more sophisticated Secret Service to protect the life of the president.

President Trump’s lifestyle has stretched the capacity of the Secret Service to protect him and his large family. His travels to multiple vacation getaways spots he owns, visits to foreign countries and regular re-election campaign rallies have resulted in constant travel and many overtime hours by agents assigned to protect him.

This stressful environment has taken its toll on some agents who have left the Secret Service for positions offering a better work/life balance. The attrition has required the remaining agents to work even more overtime. A 2014 investigation found that agents worked “an unsustainable number of hours.”

Vacancy in Permanent Homeland Security Director Position Causes Concerns

Former Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly

Nearly a month after President Trump named Homeland Security Director John Kelly as White House chef of staff, no permanent replacement has been selected.

That worries former department officials, who said it’s critical to fill the position because of the serious responsibilities of Homeland Security, from immigration enforcement to counterterrorism efforts, the Hill reports

The acting head is Deputy Secretary Elaine Duke.

The Senate is on break until after Labor Day and has placed a block not he president’s ability to make recess appointments.

“The White House understands that they need to get someone in that position quickly because if a terrorist attack were to occur without a leader at the helm of that department, they are vulnerable to the criticism that they’re asleep at the switch,” said a source close to the White House.

What’s unclear is what has delayed the president’s nomination of a new secretary.
