Federal Government Needs to Reopen 9/11 Investigation, Says Former U.S. Sen. Bob Graham

Former Florida Gov. Bob Graham urged the federal government to reopen the investigation of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to identify “an external support system,” the Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

On the anniversary of 9/11, Graham, who was a U.S. Senator at the time of the attacks, told an audience he believes people who supported the attack are still on the loose, even in Florida.

“What leads us to believe that that network has evaporated, been dismissed or rolled up?” Graham asked. “I have no reason to believe that that’s occurred.”

Some of the concern stems from a Saudi family who was living in Sarasota at the time and was accused of supping the hijackers, the Sun Sentinel reported.

FBI Never Publicly Disclosed Saudi Couple Abandoning Home With New Car Right Before Sept. 11

Is there even more about the Saudi connection to 9/11 that we didn’t know about?

Well, ex-Sen. Bob Graham, former co-chair of a Congressional inquiry after the September 11, 2001, seems to think so and is calling for the U.S. government to reopen its probe in wake of a news report that says a Saudia Arabian couple in Sarasota, Fla., abruptly abandon their home two weeks before the attacks, leaving behind a full refrigerator, clothes, and a new car, Reuters reported.

Reuters reported that the report was published by BrowardBulldog.org., a nonprofit Internet news site and was simultaneously published on the news website of the Miami Herald.

Reuters said the report, if true, indicates the FBI never disclosed the matter to the public or the 2002 joint Congressional intelligence committee investigating the attacks.

Reuters reported that the FBI office in Tampa issued a statement on Monday saying the Sarasota case was one of many leads that “were resolved and determined not to be related to any threat nor connected to the 9/11 plot.”

Column: Ex-Senators Say We’re Still Not Ready For Bioterrorism Attack

The two of us — at the request of Congress and in the service of two presidents — have for the past 30 months led a bipartisan effort to assess the danger of a WMD attack and recommend steps to reduce it.

In December 2008 the commission we led on the prevention of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and terrorism unanimously concluded that unless the world community acts decisively and with great urgency, it is more likely than not that a weapon of mass destruction will be used in a terrorist attack by the end of 2013 — and that a biological attack is more likely than nuclear. This conclusion was publicly affirmed by then-Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell.

Information has since come to light about the possibility that one or more nation-states may choose to provide sophisticated biological weapons to terrorist groups. The scenario that would result is not that of more than two dozen people becoming ill and five dying, as happened after the anthrax mailings in October 2001, but a much darker picture, as described in a November 2009 National Security Council document.
