At least 15 FBI agents who searched for victims and clues in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks have died from cancers likely linked to toxic exposure to carcinogenic fumes and dust, the Los Angeles Times reports

Three agents have died since March.

“It’s like Bin Laden is still reaching out from the grave,” said FBI Agent Thomas O’Connor, who is president of the FBI Agents Assn., a service and advocacy group for active and former agents. “It affects us all in serious ways. People are dying, others are sick. Those that are not yet sick wonder — is that headache, is it really cancer? Is that sore hip really cancer?”

The FBI deaths are only a small part of the lingering tragedy. According to the Word Trade Center Health Program, which is administered by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 7,500 emergency responders, cleanup and recovery workers and volunteers who were exposed to debris at the three Sept. 11 crash sites have been diagnosed with cancer.

Among those are more than 300 firefighters and police officers who have died of cancer and other diseases linked to the attacks.

“We are now seeing a new wave of cancers coming in,” said Dr. Michael Crane, who runs a treatment and monitoring center financed by the federal health program at Mount Sinai Health System in New York. “Most [first responders] just rushed down there and were not protected from the toxins in the air or the dust cloud. They were literally eating and breathing this material. There were known carcinogens in the air.”

After the Secret Service disrupted a cancer vigil over the weekend, the agency’s director apologized Monday.

Secret Service Director Joseph Clancy pledged to investigate why his agency forced parents and their cancer-stricken children from a park near the White House.

Clancy met with Mike Gillette, an advocate for CureFest for Childhood Cancer.

“He was very open and honest, saying that they (Secret Service) made a mistake,” Gillette said. “We never thought there was any malice intended. We’re just a bunch of families who care about kids with cancer.”

The Secret Service cleared the park because President Obama was attending an event outside of the White House on Saturday night.

The Secret Service disrupted a candlelight vigil for cancer-stricken children, ordering parents and their sick kids out of Lafayette Square in Washington D.C. on Saturday night, the Washington Post reports.

The Secret Service cited security precautions, effectively ending a two-day event, CureFest for Childhood Cancer.

“We ended up waiting at the gates for two hours, and they never let us in,” said Natasha Gould, an 11-year-old Canadian girl who started a blog after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor this year. “And to be clear, the entire crowd was half kids. I cried last night in my hotel room because it was my first CureFest, and I couldn’t believe people were acting like they don’t care about children.”

Secret Service couldn’t be reached for comment.

WASHINGTON — The FBI may be the bigger of the two agencies, but that didn’t stop the Secret Service from defeating the bureau in annual hockey game in Arlington, Va.

CNN reported that Secret Service defeated the FBI 7-6 in overtime at the Kettler Capital Iceplex. The FBI won last year.

CNN reported that attendees were asked to donate $5, which went to Secret Service agent Keith Rile, who has cancer. All 2,500 tickets for the event were sold out.

“The FBI is a family; the Secret Service is a family. We work together every day of the year, and one day we come together to have this friendly rivalry,” FBI director Robert Mueller, who attended the game, told CNN. “We’re all here to support him and support his family”

“It’s never an easy win,” Secret Service agent Todd, who played in the game, told CNN.
