Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger’s girlfriend once against refused to testify about the time the couple spent in hiding, the New York Post reports.

As a result, Catherine Greig, 64, was indicted for contempt of court on Tuesday.

Authorities want to know who helped Bulger while he was on the lam for 16 years.

“Catherine Greig has yet again failed to do the right thing,” said Boston FBI agent Joseph Bonavolonta in a press release. “Her refusal to testify has hindered the FBI’s efforts to seek justice for the victims of (Bulger’s) crimes.”

Greig, who already is serving an 8-year sentence in connection to Bulger, could serve more time for refusing to testify.

The long-time girlfriend of mobster James “Whitey” Bulger showed little remorse before she was sentenced Tuesday in Boston federal court to eight years in prison, the Boston Herald reports.

Catherine Greig said she had “no regrets” about helping the crime lord evade a worldwide manhunt for 16 years, according to the Boston Herald.

The 82-year-old Bulger, the former leader of the notorious Winter Hill Gang, is expected to go on trial in November on charges he participated in 19 murders.

Prosecutors, who sought 10 years of imprisonment in the case against Greig, said Greig and Bulger preyed on the homeless and mentally ill as well as alcoholics and drug addicts, stealing their identities in an attempt to evade authorities.

Greig had pleaded guilty to harboring a federal fugitive, conspiracy and identity fraud.

Her attorney, Evin Reddington, said he expects Greig to be released from prison in about five years, according to the Boston Herald.

The Boston Herald reports that prosecutors will ask for no less than 10 years in prison. Her lawyer obviously will ask for far less.

Bulger and Greig were captured by the FBI a year ago in California. Bulger, an FBI informant over the years, is accused of killing 19 people.

The feds are apparently worried about the assets of James “Whitey” Bulger’s girlfriend vanishing. They want to make sure she has the money to pay for any fines at sentencing.

So they’ve frozen her assets, the Boston Herald reports.

The Boston Herald reports that girlfriend Catherine Greig, who is behind bars, had $134,545 in her bank account in December, six months after Greig was captured.

Greig’s 60-year-old twin Margaret McCusker used her power of attorney in December and transferred the money to another account, the paper reported. Prosecutors say that $115,500 is still available in the new account.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Court Judge Douglas P. Woodlock ordered those funds frozen in a ruling that also prevents McCusker from selling her sister’s South Boston home.

Greig recently pleaded guilty to charges relating to harboring a fugitive. Bulger, a Boston mobster and FBI informant, is accused of killing 19 people. He was on the run for 16 years before he was captured last summer in California.

James “Whitey” Bulger’s girlfriend is throwing in the towel.

The Boston Globe reports that Catherine Greig, according to court papers filed Monday in Boston federal court, has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to harbor a fugitive, conspiracy to commit identity fraud, and identity fraud .

The Globe reported the agreement did not include a recommended sentence.

In a statement filed in court, according to the Globe, Greig said: “I engaged in conduct that was intended to help Bulger avoid detection from law enforcement and to provide him with support and assistance during his flight from law enforcement.”

She also said that Bulger had obtained false identification documents including driver’s licenses and Social Security cards.

The girlfriend of James “Whitey” Bulger, who is accused of helping the Boston mobster elude authorities for more than 16 years, may end up pleading guilty, the Boston Globe reported.

Girlfriend Catherine Greig has indicated she wanted to cop a plea to harboring a fugitive, the Globe reported. Bulger, who was an FBI informant, is accused of murdering 19 people in the 1970s and 80s.

The Globe reported that the brother of one of those victims said that a victims’ advocated for the U.S. Attorney’s Office told him about Greig’s intentions. The Globe reported that it was unclear if she would be compelled to testify against Bulger, who goes to trial in November.

Greig and Bulger were captured last summer in California.

Mobster Whitey Bulger’s Girlfriend Catherine Greig Was Loyal til the End

By Katherine Q. Seelye
The New York Times

From an early age, Catherine Elizabeth Greig knew the life of a moll. By about 20, she had married a Boston firefighter named Bobby McGonagle, joining a family with close ties to a gang that was part of the Irish mafia in their South Boston neighborhood. Violence and shootouts were not uncommon as gangs warred for control of the rackets.

Mr. McGonagle and Ms. Greig were divorced within a few years, and she became involved with Mr. Bulger, who is more than 20 years her senior.

It was a sign, perhaps, that if she could overlook his possible involvement in the deaths of her two brothers-in-law, she could overlook a lot more.

The latest FBI campaign to try and nab Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger is paying off — at least if you measure it by the bulk of tips.

The Boston Globe reports the FBI has gotten a number of tips that have “exceeded our expectations”, the result of  a new ad campaign aimed at finding Bulger’s girlfriend, who is believed to be with him. Still, nothing yet in terms of capturing the ever-elusive gangster.

The new campaign includes billboards and 30-second daytime television spots in 14 cities, and focuses on Bulger’s companion Catherine Greig, 60.  The FBI hopes people will recognize Greig, and that will lead to Bulger’s arrest. She is also wanted for harboring a fugitive.

“We’ve been effective and efficient in reaching the geographic areas that we intended to,’’ FBI Special Agent Gregory Comcowich of Boston told the Globe. “The number of tips has exceeded our expectations.’’
