The FBI agent who is in charge of the investigation into the Florida airport shooting was known for interrogating Saddam Hussein alone for months.

George Piro, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Miami field office, is leading the investigation into the shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport that killed five people, the Associated Press reports.

Esteban Santiago, a 26-year-old Iraq war veteran, is facing the death penalty if convicted.

Piro pledged to fight for the families and victims.

“I want to ensure these families that law enforcement is working tirelessly in order to ensure justice is served,” he said.

Pro became an FBI agent in 1999 and is a native of Beirut, Lebanon. He is fluent in Arabic and Assyrian.

Even in Florida, terrorism is the FBI’s top concern.

So said south Florida’s new special agent in charge, George Piro, 46.

“Our biggest threat domestically is homegrown, violent extremists, and it’s no different here in South Florida,” Piro said, reports the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Following in the footsteps of his predecessors, Piro said terrorism remains the FBI’s No. 1 priority.

Piro is known for “the guy that interrogated Saddam.” But he hopes to become known for more than that.

“Being an FBI agent is actually more rewarding, or has more meaning for me, than just interrogating Saddam Hussein,” Piro said.

George L. Piro, the FBI agent who befriended and interrogated Saddam Hussein after his capture, has been named head of the Miami FBI Division.

Piro last worked as the deputy assistant director of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate at FBI headquarters.

He joined the FBI in 1999 and was assigned to the FBI’s Phoenix Field Office to work international terrorism cases. In March 2003, he was promoted to the Counterterrorism Division at FBI headquarters and was subsequently selected as the team leader and interrogator for the FBI team responsible for the interrogation of Saddam Hussein and other key figures within the former Iraqi regime, the FBI said in a press release.

In March 2006, he was promoted as the supervisor of the Washington Field Office’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. He also served as the assistant special agent in charge of the International Terrorism Branch for the Washington Field Office.

From 2011 to 2013, Piro served as director of the High-Value Detainee Interrogation Group (HIG), an interagency unit overseen by the Counterterrorism Security Group within the White House that involves the intelligence community, the FBI press release said.

Born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon,  he is fluent in  Arabic and Assyrian speaker. He served as a police officer in California for nearly 10 years before joining the FBI.

How the FBI Broke Saddam Hussein

I remember hearing George Piro speak once and one thing he said was that Saddam Hussein loved Saddam Hussein. I guess there was a reason for a country full of Saddam statues.

WASHINGTON –Saddam Hussein loved to talk – and to b.s. his sole interrogator, FBI Supervisory Special Agent George Piro.

But Piro – backed up by a team of FBI agents and crack CIA analysts – knew Saddam’s history too well. Where there were gaps, Piro was able to parry with the imprisoned leader to get credible answers. “High Value Detainee-1” was soon blabbing so freely it was hard for him to keep his lies intact.

As the weeks wore on, Saddam opened up more and more as the FBI-CIA team leveraged its strategy to “overwhelm” – and break – him by confronting the deposed dictator with evidence of his crimes against humanity.

He was soon boasting of terrible misdeeds against his own people – in order to set the historical record straight, which Piro had encouraged.
