Chicago has long been known for its deep dish pizza, blues, Dah Bears, Dah Bulls and public corruption.

In living up to the latter, Alderman Isaac Carothers, a key ally of Mayor Daley, resigned Monday after striking up a deal with the feds that will put him behind bars for more than two years for taking bribes, The Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The paper reported that at 2:49 p.m., Carothers submitted his resignation to the mayor.

“It is with deep regret that I inform you that I, Isaac S. Carothers, will resign my elected position as alderman of the 29th Ward effective on Feb. 1, 2010,” Carothers wrote, according to the Sun-Times.

No Warm Welcome For Indicted Chicago Aldr. Carothers Who Wore FBI Wire

Wearing a wire around your colleagues is not a great way to ingratiate yourself. It is, however,  a good way to get a cut on your time when you cooperate with the FBI. It looks like indicted Chicago Alderman Isaac Carothers will be eating lunch alone.

CHICAGO — If there is one thing that bothers Chicago’s aldermen more than FBI agents and investigative reporters, it’s a colleague who cooperates with the feds against fellow City Council members.

On Monday, nobody openly used the three-letter R-word — rat — like they did when an alderman wore a wire in the 1990s. But more than a few aldermen admitted they were not thrilled to see newly indicted Ald. Isaac Carothers (29th) back at work.

When Carothers was charged with bribery along with a real estate developer last week, federal court records indicated he wore a wire to secretly record discussions with other city officials and developers.

Carothers came to City Hall on Monday for his first official appearance since his indictment. Although often eager to bluntly give his opinion, Carothers did not say a word into the microphone on his desk during two committee meetings. He also declined to discuss the allegations with reporters.

Indicted Chicago Alder. Isaac Carothers Wore FBI Wire

There’s something to be said about tradition in the great city of Chicago. In the last 36 years, 30 sitting or former aldermen have been convicted of  crimes. Obviously Alderman Carothers is all about upholding tradition. His father, a former alderman, went to prison in the 1980s for extortion.  Viva la tradition.

CHICAGO — One of Mayor Daley’s closest allies on the City Council has been wearing a wire and secretly recording “public officials and real estate developers” for more than a year, a City Hall bombshell that was revealed in a federal court document Thursday.

Ald. Isaac “Ike” Carothers (29th) was charged Thursday with fraud and bribery for allegedly accepting $40,000 in home improvements and other gifts from a politically connected developer, but he has been cooperating with the feds since April 2008, according to court papers.

A government motion filed in February asked to keep under seal the indictment of the developer — Calvin Boender — until May. It was unsealed Thursday.

The document identifies Carothers as “Public Official A” — with clear identifiers pointing to him, including a reference to one of his family members running for Congress in 2004.
