President Trump asked Attorney General Jeff Session earlier this year to close the criminal case against former Arizona county sheriff Joe Arpaio, a partner in the crackdown of illegal immigration, the Washington Post reports

Trump was advised that it would be inappropriate to drop the criminal case against Arpaio, who was found in contempt of court for ignoring a federal judge’s order to stop ordering the detainment of people based solely on suspicions that they were undocumented immigrants.

So on Friday, the president issued his first pardon for Arpaio, one of the president’s allies in the “birther” movement.

“We knew the president wanted to do this for some time now and had worked to prepare for whenever the moment may come,” said one White House official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the action.

Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, a prominent Donald Trump supporter who has been a firebrand for the anti-immigration movement, is expected to be charged for willfully defying federal court orders.

The Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section said Tuesday it intends to take the Maricopa County sheriff to trial on criminal charges, the Washington Post reports.

Arpaio is accused of failing to stop targeting undocumented immigrants without a legal basis.

Arpaio’s attorney, Mel McDonald, said the sheriff “vehemently denies that he was ever knowingly and willfully contemptuous of any court order” and plans to fight the case.

U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow ruled in August that the sheriff was defying the court’s order, and the sheriff’s office “continued to stop and detain persons based on factors including their race, and frequently arrested and delivered such persons to [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] when there were no state charges to bring against them.”

“Sheriff Arpaio did so based on the notoriety he received for, and the campaign donations he received because of, his immigration enforcement activity,” Snow wrote.

Armed militias are complicating already tense, complex crackdowns on immigration, the Border Patrol has warned.

The Associated Press reports that the Border Patrol issued a warning to agents to be on the look out for militias that are working in fatigues but have no authority law enforcement authority or training.

The warning came after agents were rounding up immigrants recently and were helped with men in fatigues. Border Patrol agents said they throught they were being helped by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

“How do they identify themselves? Do they have badges? How do we know who they are?” asked J.P. Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office. “If they’re all just dressed in camos, it’s kind of hard to distinguish whether they’re law enforcement or not. … There’s a lot of potential for stuff to go wrong.”

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio warned of “chaos if you’re going to have private citizens dressed just like our deputies taking the law into their own hands.”

A member of the Arizona Minutemen militia pointed a rifle at a sheriff’s deputy last year after apparently mistaking him for a drug trafficker.

If controversial Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Arizona gets his way, unmanned drones will be patrolling Maricopa County in search of drug dealers and other scofflaws, News 92 FM reports.

Arpaio, who is a lightening rod on immigration issues, said the idea is to help Border Patrol locate undocumented immigrants and drug dealers.

“We have danger out there. We have dope peddlers shooting each other and I have my deputies to worry about,” he told News 92.

The ACLU expressed concerns, saying drones are an invasion of privacy because they put “everyone else who happens to be nearby underneath the drone as it travels to the target area.”

Authorities are trying to determine who sent an Arizona sheriff explosives in the mail.

CNN reports that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who is known for his unusual treatment of inmates, was sent a package that turned out to be a bomb.

The package never made it past the post office because it caught the attention of the postal service.

“We evacuated the post office, got all our employees to safety,” U.S. Postal Inspector Andrew Rivas in Flagstaff told CNN.

Arpaio has made national attention for forcing many inmates to wear pink underwear and sleep in tents.

A former Pima Superior Court judge who once had some pointed words about Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio in a court ruling, has been nominated by President Obama to take over the U.S. Attorney post in Phoenix, the Phoenix New Times reports.

Judge John Leonardo once wrote in a ruling that the controversial sheriff “misused the power of his office.”

Interestingly, if confirmed, Leonardo could deal with Sheriff Joe as an ally in the fight against crime.

Leonardo would replace Dennis Burke, who resigned in August as a result of the ongoing controversy over ATF’s failed Operation Fast and Furious.
