New documents reveal that the FBI has monitored the annual Burning Man festival as tens of thousands of people gathered in the Nevada desert, Reuters reports.

MuckRock.com acquired records that show agents joined artists, musicians and other revelers during the festival in 2010 and concluded that crowd control and illegal drugs were a big concern at the festival in northern Nevada.

The FBI wouldn’t comment on the records.

The records show that the bureau estimated that about 50,000 people turned out.

“The greatest known threat in this event is crowd control issues and use of illegal drugs by the participants,” said an FBI document on the festival posted to MuckRock.com.

Less than two years after prosecutors discovered a pattern of racial discrimination, the nation’s largest sheriff’s department reached a sweeping agreement Tuesday with the Justice Department to restore civil rights.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved the deal 4-1 after patterns of abuse were found, including unlawful stops and seizures and excessive force, The Christian Science Monitor reports.

In addition, the Justice Department claims that Los Angeles sheriff’ deputies harassed and intimidated minorities in public housing.

The agreement means the sheriff’s department admitted no wrongdoing but will be overseen by three outside experts.

Former FBI Agent Hired by School District to Scour Social Media Comments by Students

One school district in Alabama has taken the unusual step of hiring a former FBI agent to monitor students on social media, the Daily Intelligencer reports.

The idea was to catch students who make statements linking them to drugs, guns, sex and gangs.

The effort led to 14 expulsions last year.

Ex-FBI Agent Chris McRae was hired to look for expulsion-worthy transgressions.

The expulsions drew criticism because 12 of the 14 expelled students were black in a district where only 40% of the students are black.

“That is effectively targeting or profiling black children in terms of behavior and behavioral issues,” said Madison county commissioner Bob Harrison.

It’s not the crime of the century.

Nonetheless, it’s prison time for Michael Plank, 42, of Lomita, Calif., who was sentenced Wednesday in Los Angeles federal court to 15 months behind bars for smuggling 15 lizards from Australia into the United States.

Essentially, he got one month in prison for every lizard.

Plank had pleaded guilty to smuggling two Geckos, two Monitor lizards and 11 Skink lizards from Australia in November 2009. He tried to pass through Customs at Los Angeles International Airport with the lizards in his money belts.

Federal law prohibits the importation of wildlife from another country without a permit. The animals must also be declared in the U.S. at the first point of entry.

“This sentence of 15 months in federal prison sends a strong message to both wildlife smugglers and would-be wildlife smugglers that the illegal trafficking in wildlife is a serious crime that will result in significant prison time for those who engage in thisdespicable activity,” U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said in a statement.
