FBI: NYC Terror Suspect Inspired by ISIS Magazine with Instructions for Truck Attacks

The Uzbek immigrant who plowed into people on a bike path in New York City on Tuesday afternoon, killing eight and injuring nearly a dozen others, was inspired by ISIS and planned the attack for weeks, according to the FBI.

The FBI announced Wednesday afternoon that it was seeking information on another Uzbek immigrant who may have helped in the attack. But about an hour later, the FBI said during a press conference that Mukhammadzoir Kadirov, 32, was no longer being sought. It wasn’t immediately clear why investigators are no longer searching for the man, whose image was circulated on wanted posters.

Reuters reported the truck driver,  Sayfullo Saipov, had been in contact with a man who had been investigated by the FBI. It wasn’t immediately clear if that was Kadirov.

Saipov was charged in federal court Wednesday with terrorism-related crimes in connection with the deadliest terror attack in the city since Sept. 11, 2001.

Investigators say Saipov was shot in the abdomen by a police officer, planned the attack for weeks “in the name of ISIS,” and was inspired by the terrorist group’s magazine in which followers were urged to carry out a truck attack and leave behind a note indicated their support for ISIS.

Authorities found handwritten notes left behind by Saipov that suggested ISIS “would endure forever.”

Investigators have interviewed Saipov at the hospital, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Videos viewed by authorities show Saipov driving at a moderate speed until he accelerated into the jogging path.

President Trump used the attack to slam a bipartisan immigration bill that created a visa lottery program that allowed Saipov to enter the U.S.

In the wake of the deadly terrorist attacks in London, Homeland Security said Sunday there’s no evidence of “a specific, credible terror threat in the United States.”

Still, the federal agency is remaining vigilant and monitoring the situation, the USA Today reports.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city was on high alert, and critical response units have been placed in “particularly prominent” locations throughout the city.

“That means New Yorkers today will see a heavier presence at key locations around the city,” he said Sunday while speaking to reporters. “You will see a stronger police presence, including our counter-terror forces, which are heavily armed and heavily geared.”

Still, he said, this “is not a cause for alarm – that is a cause for comfort, to see the NYPD out in strength to protect u against any situation,” the mayor said.

So far this year, there have been 500 terror attacks that lead to 3,500 deaths “and many more physically and mentally wounded” said Tom Cochran, CEO and executive director of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Homeland Security has cautioned U.S. citizens in London to “maintain security awareness.”

Customers waiting to get into a restaurant in New York City were searched because Donald Trump and his family were eating inside.

While the president-elect dined at 21 Club on Monday night with Melania, Ivanka, Eric, Donald Jr. and son-in-law Jared Kushner, police and the Secret Service patted down customers and checked them with a metal-detecting wand, TMZ reports, showing videos from outraged customers.

The videos show hungry customers facing intense security just to eat.

Donald Trump stands to gain financially by having the Secret Service protect him and his family at Trump Tower in New York City.

The Secret Service is reportedly negotiating with his business to lease at least two floors of Trump Tower at a cost of about $3 million, the New York Post reports.

If the deal works out as planned, the Secret Service would rent two floors to “run a 24/7 command post” and provide space for more than 250 Secret Service agents and New York Police Department officers.

Trump has come under criticism for trying to profit off his position as soon-to-be president.

Globe Gazette: Donald Trump Should Live in White House, Not NYC

Donald Trump, 2016? Yes. But also Barack Obama, 2008. It may be hard to believe now, but Obama had an adjustment to make when the Oval Office beckoned. In figuring his next moves, Trump could take a page from his predecessor.

Trump lives and works in the 58-story Trump Tower, which is in midtown Manhattan on Fifth Avenue, one of the busiest commercial arteries in America. Since Election Day, the building has been the focus of security efforts that have caused inconveniences for many locals.

Part of 56th Street has been closed to traffic. Two Fifth Avenue lanes are no longer in use. Trump Tower houses Gucci and Nike stores, which shoppers can get to only through the security cordon. Restaurateur David Chang tweeted, “All the NYPD & Secret Service checkpoints killing restaurant foot traffic on 56th St.” In New York Magazine, Justin Davidson said the area has become “the urban equivalent of the security line at JFK.”

A no-fly zone was imposed on the airspace above. In a borough that gave 86 percent of its votes to Hillary Clinton, Trump Tower also has been an irresistible lure for protesters, who create additional tangles.

President-elect Donald Trump’s decision to divide his time between the White Housee and his home and headquarters at Trump Tower have put the Secret Service in a bind.

The New York Daily News reports that the NYPD and Secret Service may shut down Fifth Avenue in New York, which would create traffic gridlocks in a city already full of them.

But police aren’t happy with the plan and said closing down a major avenue “can’t happen.”

“It’s a negotiation,” a source told the Daily News. “Their job is to keep the President safe. Our job is to keep the President safe, but also let the people who live and work and visit there have some semblance of normality. It won’t be complete normality, but it’ll be adjusted normality.”

The National Transportation Safety Board will determine what caused a 12-car commuter train and a work train to sideswipe each other in New York, leading to 33 injuries of 33 people, four seriously, Gob. Andrew M. Cuomo said Sunday.

State officials said the eastbound Long Island Rail Road train derailed after it sideswiped a yellow maintenance train, leaving a “splatter of yellow paint where the first collision occurred,” the Washington Post reports.

“Both trains were running in the same direction — one was a work train, one was a revenue train and they sideswiped each other,” said Cuomo. “The question is why.”

The FBI is searching for two men who were spotted removing an improvised explosive device from luggage on a sidewalk in New York City over the weekend.

Surveillance video shows the men taking the luggage but leaving the bomb behind.

The device was near another bomb that detonated on West 23rd Street in Manhattan on Saturday night, injuring more than 25 people. The men were captured on surveillance between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., the same period when the other bomb exploded.

In a statement, the bureau said, “The FBI is interested in speaking to these individuals and recovering the luggage.”

Police arrested Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, in connection with the bomb that had detonated. It’s unclear whether the other men in the video are connected to Rahami.
