A former Justice Department official warned European countries about the risks of Russia launching cyber attacks to meddle in their elections.

Former Assistant Attorney General John Carlin, who served in the Obama administration, said the U.S. wasn’t aggressive enough to deter hacking and leaking of Democratic Party emails prior to the presidential election, Reuters reports.

“What we did was too late,” Carlin said during a panel discussion on election hacking at the RSA cybersecurity conference. “We weren’t bringing deterrence at all to the table.”

U.S. intelligence officials believe Russia hacked the Democratic Paty nan effort to disrupt the election and swing it in favor of Trump.

“Pre-election, it’s vital that not just the United States but partners like Germany, like France make it clear what the red line is, that there’s going to be strong deterrence and that in terms of deterrence, our policy has got to be we are going to take action until the action stops,” Carlin said.

“So there is no ceiling on the level we will ratchet up the deterrence when you are undermining a core value.”

Bernie Sanders’ refusal to leave the presidential race is costing taxpayers $38,000 a day for Secret Service protection, the Washington Post reports.

Sanders said he wants to stay in the race to help shape the party’s platform, which happens at the Democratic National Convention next month.

“He’s still a candidate for president, so we continue to protect him,” one agent said.

Four presidential candidates received Secret Service protection this year: Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Ben Carson and Sanders.

Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is not backing away from his comments in 1974 that the CIA is a “dangerous institution” that has supported “fascist dictatorships,” the Boston Globe reports.

But Sanders said at a CNN town hall in South Carolina that his arguments were “40 years ago” and that the CIA plays “an important role.”

Still, he said the agency has “done things which they should not have done on behalf of the United States government.’’

Sanders said that the CIA backed the overthrow of a democratically elected prime minister in 1953, leading to “the Iranian Revolution, and we are where we are today.”

The presidential candidate also pointed to the overthrow of another democratically elected leader, Salvadore Allende in Chile.

Donald Trump Urges FBI to Pursue Charges Against Clinton, Saying He’d Rather Face Bernie Sanders

By Steve Neavling

Donald Trump is urging the FBI to aggressively pursue charges against Hillary Clinton for using a private email server while she was secretary of state, saying he would rather run against Bernie Sanders, Politico reports.

“There is no answer to what she did. You know the amazing thing, other than greed, there was no — what’s she doing?” Trump asked. “You just use what you’re supposed to use, and you assume people are listening. Who the hell cares? And then you do what you have to do. All this for what? It’s greed. It’s really just greed in its own way. All she had to do was just do what she was supposed to do.”

Trump said he’d “love to run against Bernie,” calling Sanders a coward after he allowed Black Lives Matters protesters to steal the stage from him in Seattle in August.

“He walked back like a little puppy. This is gonna be our president,” Trump said. “I would love—please FBI, please go after Hillary. I wanna run against Bernie!”

In the midst of the Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, a former U.S. attorney said he believes the Democratic frontrunner may soon be indicted over the e-mail scandal, The Daily Mail reports.

The remarks come just before the Iowa caucuses in February, which suggests Clinton’s campaign could be derailed.

Joe DiGenova, a prosecutor appointed to President Reagan, said the investigation has reached a “critical mass.”

“They have reached a critical mass in their investigation of the secretary and all of her senior staff,” DiGenova said Tuesday. “And, it’s going to come to a head, I would suggest, in the next 60 days.”

DiGenova said the Justice Department is “not going to be able to walk away from it.”

“They are now at over 1,200 classified emails. And, that’s just for the ones we know about from the State Department. That does not include the ones that the FBI is, in fact, recovering from her hard drives.”

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, is set to receive protection from the Secret Service, reports FOX News. Rival candidate Newt Gingrich has also requested protection from the service, and Mitt Romney already has it, according to FOX.

Santorum asked for protection after an incident earlier this month after “Occupy” supporters heckled the candidate near Tacoma, Wash., earlier this month. After a scuffle broke out at the Washington event involving Occupy Tacoma protestors one man was arrested for the “glitter bombing” of Santorum, an act of protest that has spread recently in defiance of the candidate’s extreme views on homosexuality. Glitter bombing involves throwing glitter at the candidate.
