Federal investigators may be closer to solving the mysterious death of a Border Patrol agent who was found at the bottom of a ravine in Texas last month.

The FBI is investigating two brothers who have been called “persons of interest” in the death of Rogelio Martinez and critical injuries to his partner on Nov. 18 near Van Horn, Texas, the Dallas Morning News reports

The news, which the feds said is preliminary, comes less than two weeks after a local sheriff and the FBI cast doubt on a Border Patrol union’s claims that the agents were brutally attacked by blunt objects, possibly rocks, not far from the border of Mexico. President Trump also peddled the unfounded narrative that the agents were attacked by immigrants.

Court documents signed on Dec. 2 reveal that FBI agents questioned Antonio and Daniel Muñoz and discovered red-stained fabric in a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am.

A forensics lab in Virginia is testing the fabric.

The brothers have denied they were involved, and neither has been arrested or charged.

Investigators said they are still pursuing the theory that the agents fell into a ravine along treacherous terrain.

Although President Trump quickly declared that two Border Patrol agents were brutally beaten by rocks in Texas last month, a local sheriff says the pair may have been struck by a tractor-trailer.

Culberson County Sheriff Oscar Carrillo told the Dallas Morning News he believes a tractor-trailer may have accidentally hit them.

Rogelio Martinez, 36, and his partner were found in a ravine along a treacherous stretch of land near Van Horn in West Texas, about 30 miles from the Mexican border.

Martinez died soon after following traumatic head injuries and broken memories. His partner, who has yet to be identified, reportedly can’t remember what happened and remains hospitalized.

“From the beginning we were radioed to assist in the incident as an injury, not an assault,” Carrillo said. “That’s the way it was communicated to us.”

A day after the injuries were reported, Trump tweeted, “Border Patrol Officer killed at Southern Border, another badly hurt. We will seek out and bring to justice those responsible. We will, and must, build the Wall!”

Trump added that the surviving agent had been “badly beaten.”

The union that represents Border Patrol agents, the National Border Patrol Council, suggested the agents were attacked.

But local authorities and the FBI are more skeptical.

The FBI is now offering a $45,000 reward for information leading to what caused the injuries and death.

A Border Patrol agent was laid to rest Saturday following his mysterious death at the bottom of a culvert in the Texas desert.

Family, friends and law enforcement officers attended the funeral at a Catholic church in El Paso, Texas, to mourn the death of Rogelio Martinez, 36, the Washington Post reports

Martinez’s U.S. flag-draped coffin was carried by Border Patrol pallbearers in green uniforms while bagpipes played.

“It honors him to see law enforcement agencies from across the United States” attend the service, Border Patrol spokesman Ramiro Cordero told reporters outside the church.

Martinez, who was responding to a triggered sensor on Sunday night in west Texas, was found with “traumatic head injuries” and broken bones. He died early Sunday from head injuries.

His partner, who has not been identified, also was found with head injuries and had been in critical condition last week.

The union representing Border Patrol officers insist the agents were attacked with rocks, but the FBI is not so sure.
