U.S. Sen. Rand Paul was mowing his grass outside his Kentucky home when he came under a brutal attack by a neighbor Friday.

The attack left the Republican with five broken ribs, lung contusions and injuries to his face.

His neighbor, Rene Boucher, 59, was charged with one count of fourth-degree assault causing minor injury and has since been released on bond, Reuters reports

“Senator Paul has five rib fractures including three displaced fractures. This type of injury is caused by high velocity severe force,” Doug Stafford, a senior adviser to Paul, said in a statement, according to multiple media reports.

“It is not clear exactly how soon he will return to work, as the pain is considerable as is the difficulty in getting around, including flying,” the reports quoted Stafford as saying. He added that the senator’s type of injury could lead to life-threatening injuries.

Authorities said it wasn’t immediately clear what prompted Paul’s neighbor to enter the senator’s property in a gated community near Bowling Green and tackle him from behind.

The Secret Service was notified that North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr joked about gun owners shooting Hillary Clinton.

The comments were captured on a recording, the Daily Beast reports.

Burr walked into a gun shop and spotted a magazine about rifles in the store “with a picture of Hillary Clinton on the front of it.”

Burr said “nothing made me feel better” than seeing that image.

“I was a little bit shocked at that—it didn’t have a bullseye on it,” Burr jokes to a crowd in Mooresville, North Carolina. “But on the bottom right (of the magazine), it had everybody for federal office in this particular state that they should vote for. So let me assure you, there’s an army of support out there right now for our candidates.”

Burr later apologized, saying, “The comment I made was inappropriate, and I apologize for it.”

On the campaign trail, Donald Trump has quipped about Clinton being killed by gun owners.

A Democratic senator is calling for a federal investigation into Trump Model Management after a Mother Jones’ investigation uncovered alleged labor and immigration violations.

At least four Trump models, who were non-U.S. citizens, claimed they were on tourist visas while working for the company owned by Donald Trump.

“I am extremely concerned by the claims levied against Trump Model Management and ask that you open an investigation into the company’s employment practices,” Boxer wrote in a Wednesday letter to León Rodríguez, the director of the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), a part of the Department of Homeland Security.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said she found Mother Jones’ report to be “disturbing,” calling on the agency to “make clear that immigration and labor violations like these will not be tolerated.”

Mother Jones wrote:

Two of the former models told Mother Jones that they were coached on how to evade the scrutiny of immigration and customs officers by using fake pretenses for entering the country and even writing false addresses on customs forms.

While working for Trump’s agency, the models said, they were charged exorbitant rent to bunk with other Trump models in cramped, dormitory-style quarters while competing for coveted work visas. Those who didn’t make the cut were sent home—but not until after rent and other fees were deducted from their Trump Model Management earnings.

A new gun designed to resemble a smartphone may soon be investigating by the ATF.

Sen. Chuch Schumer, D-N.Y., requested the investigation, saying the small pocket pistol is designed to evade authorities.

“What’s next, a gun made to look like a chocolate bar?” Schumer said at a press conference on Monday, the Guardian reports. “Enough is enough.”

The two-shot .38-caliber derringer has a foldout handle and is marketed by the company, Ideal Conceal.

“Smartphones are EVERYWHERE, so your new pistol will easily blend in with today’s environment,” the manufacturer’s site reads. “In its locked position it will be virtually undetectable because it hides in plain sight.” The weapon is selling for $395, substantially less than the current generation of flagship mobile devices, and is expected to be available in mid-2016.

The ATF declined to comment on the issue.

An ongoing federal investigation of Massachusetts state Sen. Brian Joyce advanced Wednesday as the FBI and IRS conducted “court authorized activity” that included a raid at the Democrat’s law office, the Boston Herald reports.

Joyce previously was under fire for using nearly $5,000 in campaign funds to pay for his son’s 2014 high school graduation party.

Gov. Charlie Baker also has called for a state Ethics Commission investigation after the Boston Globe reported that Joyce was receiving free dry cleaning for more than a decade.

Baker said he was “troubled by some of the issues that were raised previously with respect to the senator’s relationship with some of the folks in his district.”

Joyce’s attorney Howard Cooper said his client was cooperating with authorities.

“It is unfortunate that recent stories in the media appear to have sparked an investigation,” Cooper’s statement read. “Senator Joyce has been cooperating with each inquiry that has taken place to date resulting from those stories and believes that he has done absolutely nothing wrong.”

A former New York state senator who was convicted of lying to FBI agents was sentenced to six months of house arrest on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

The once-powerful Republican lawmaker, Thomas Libous, lied to agents about a public corruption investigation.

A judge said Libous, 62, would have been sent to prison if he didn’t have terminal cancer.

Libous was accused of pledging to steer business to a law firm if it hired his son.

Authorities also said his son’s salary was supposed to be financed by a lobbying firm.

Federal prosecutors are fighting back against claims by Sen. Robert Menendez that the allegations against him are based on lies by the FBI and misconduct by the government.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the New Jersey Democrat is accusing prosecutors of relying on misstatements by girlfriends, lawmakers and members of the Obama administration.

Prosecutors fired back in a pair of federal court filings in New Jersey.

Menendez, 61, has denied charges that he accepted nearly $1 million in gifts and campaign contributions from a Florida eye doctor. He has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors shifted the blame on the senator’s lawyers, saying the engaged in “naked rhetoric that conflicts with the facts and the law.”

In April 1975, Sen. George McGovern wanted to know whether the FBI had collected any information on him in case he ended up on the presidential ticket.

McGovern was most concerned that the FBI possessed information about a child he fathered as a young man, the Argus Leader reports.

Hoping to work out a compromise with the bureau, McGovern met with FBI officials and was told the bureau had information that he fathered a child.

According to new FBI records released on McGovern, the senator “made no comment nor asked any questions about the statement that the allegation concerning the illegitimate child had been verified during the special inquiry investigation.”

The FBI last month released nearly 1,4000 pages in McGovern’s FBI file, showing that he was often pursued by the bureau.

The records show that McGovern fathered a child before he was married in 1943 and that the information somehow ended up with President Nixon’s re-election campaign.
