Border Patrol agents in Texas arrested two convicted sex offenders who had re-entered the U.S. after previously being removed, San Angelo Live reports.

The incidents were unrelated.

On Dec. 4, Eagle Pass Border Patrol agents apprehended a 57-year-old undocumented immigrant who had been arrested and charged in June 1993 with indecency with a child. Oswaldo Bienvenido Galo-Garcia was sentenced to two years before being deported back to Honduras.

On Dec. 7, a 24-year-old undocumented immigrant from Honduras was arrested by Border Patrol agents for entering the U.S. illegally. Agents discovered that Oscar Omar Rivas-Izaguirre had been convicted of child fondling in October 2013 and was deported back to Honduras on Sept. 28, 2015.

“Two serious offenders were stopped short of possibly doing more harm to the people of this great nation,” said Del Rio Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Matthew J. Hudak. “The commitment our Border Patrol agents have in keeping America secure is a continuous effort; and this is one more example.”

An increasing number of sex offenders are trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border.

Tucson News Now reports that Border Patrol agents from the Tucson Sector have arrested 46 sex offenders so far this fiscal year, compared to 69 last fiscal year.

Since March 1, agents arrested 10 sex offenders. Eight were from Mexico and one each from El Salvador and Honduras.

“Border Patrol agents encounter sex offenders, various people with criminal histories in their course of duty nearly every day,” said agent Adrienne Crowley, a spokesperson for the Tucson Sector.

“Border Patrol agents in Tucson Sector face various threats in the field,” Crowley said. “Every person they encounter potentially has a criminal history so we really don’t know what we’re working with until we bring that person in and run those records checks.  Agents are working every day to make our community safer…by getting those people off the streets.”

A Mexican national said he was raped by cellmates in a Montana jail while he was waiting to be deported, the Great Falls Tribune reports.

“I want people to know what happened to me, and I want the people responsible to be punished,” Audemio Orozco-Ramirez, 40, told the Tribune through an interpreter. “I don’t want anyone else to ever have to go through what I went through.”

Orozco-Ramirez also wants his rapists to be identified and tested for STDs.

The Tribune wrote that two of Orozco-Ramirez’s cell mates were listed on the state’s sexual and violent offender database.

WASHINGTON — As part of an initiative to crack down on child exploitation, the U.S. Marshals Service is launching a program targeting the top 500 most dangerous convicted sex offenders who aren’t in compliance with the sex registration laws, the Justice Department announced Monday.

The program is part of a nationwide initiative — the National Strategy for Child Exploitation Prevention and Interdiction — that was unveiled Monday by Atty. General Eric Holder Jr.

The strategy includes plans to create a national database that will enable federal, state, tribal, local and international law enforcement partners to coordinate investigations better.

Additionally, Holder said the Justice Department has created 38 additional Assistant U.S. Attorney positions to devote to child exploitation cases. It will also fill vacancies in that area.

“Although we’ve made meaningful progress in protecting children across the country, and although we’ve brought a record number of offenders to justice in recent years, it is time to renew our commitment to this work,” Holder said in a statement.

“It is time to intensify our efforts,” he added. “This new strategy provides the roadmap necessary to do just that – to streamline our education, prevention and prosecution activities; to improve information sharing and collaboration; and to make the most effective use of limited resources.”
