One of America’s most controversial law enforcement officials, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, may face criminal contempt-of-court charges following allegations he defied federal orders to stop racially profiling Latinos.

The years-long legal saga is expected to come to a head as the Justice Department decides whether Arpaio should be charged for intentionally defying federal orders, the Washington Post reports.

Arpaio, dubbed as “America’s Toughest Sheriff,” has long been an adversary of immigration activists for his tough, defiant stance on Latinos.

The Washington Post wrote:

The decision followed several other blows for the Arizona sheriff in the protracted case. In May, U.S. District Court Judge G. Murray Snow ruled that Arpaio and his aides – Chief Deputy Jerry Sheridan, Capt. Steve Bailey and his former attorney, Michele Iafrate – had intentionally ignored federal orders to stop racially profiling Latinos at traffic stops and in “saturation patrols” of predominantly Latino neighborhoods.

On Aug. 19, Snow referred the sheriff and three of his associates to be prosecuted for criminal contempt of court.

The decision was almost without precedent, so unusual that even the Justice Department initially seemed unsure of what, exactly, would happen next.

WASHINGTON —  Arizona’s infamous Sheriff Joe Arpaio — the man who brands himself as “America’s toughest sheriff” and has launched an extensive investigation into whether President Barack Obama is a U.S. citizen — will have to make some changes under a settlement with the federal government on Friday that would resolve some allegations that the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office routinely violated the civil rights of Latinos.

The agreement, approved by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, would partially resolve the lawsuit, specifically the allegations that Arpaio’s office unlawfully detained Hispanic workers during worksite raids and violated their Fourth and 14th Amendment rights as well as the allegation that his office retaliated against critics in violation of the First Amendment.

Separately, the agreement would require Arpaio’s office to expand language access for Hispanics who are held in the county’s jails. Arpaio will still be headed to trial next month to resolve allegations in the lawsuit that his department targeted Latino drivers.

If controversial Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Arizona gets his way, unmanned drones will be patrolling Maricopa County in search of drug dealers and other scofflaws, News 92 FM reports.

Arpaio, who is a lightening rod on immigration issues, said the idea is to help Border Patrol locate undocumented immigrants and drug dealers.

“We have danger out there. We have dope peddlers shooting each other and I have my deputies to worry about,” he told News 92.

The ACLU expressed concerns, saying drones are an invasion of privacy because they put “everyone else who happens to be nearby underneath the drone as it travels to the target area.”
