A lot of secrecy still shrouds the FBI’s past obsession with former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

AllGov.com reports that the FBI has refused to disclose records detailing her trip to the Soviet Union in 1957 and 1958.

Former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover believed Roosevelt was a Communist sympathizer.

Now a researcher with George Washington University is suing the FBI for the records under the Freedom of Information Act.

The files contain “charges against her for suspected Communist activities, threats to her life on the grounds of her disloyalty to the country, close monitoring of her activities and writings, and a record of possible insurrectionary groups that she may have influenced.”

Britain’s Winston Churchill urged the U.S. to drop a nuclear bomb on the Soviet Union in 1947, fearing the Kremlin would spread Communism and eventually have atomic weapons, according to FBI archives.

International Business Times reports that the revelation is in a new book, “When Lions Road: The Churchills and The Kennedys,” which is to be published next month.

The memo indicates that Churchilll met with Republican Sen. Styles Bridges in 1947 and urged him to talk to President Harry Truman about launching a nuclear attack.

The Soviet Union didn’t yet have nuclear capabilities and would have been unable to defend itself.

Churchill feared that the Kremlin would wipe out civilization when it created nuclear weapons.

Fearing the Soviet Union was planning to attack Alaska in the 1950s, the FBI trained Alaskan residents so become informant behind enemy lines, according to declassified documents, reports RT.com.

The initiative did not include women or native people, like the Native Americans.

At the time, the FBI feared that the Soviet would invade by plane and or drop paratroopers on more populated areas in Alaska.

The initiative to train citizens to provide intelligence was a highly classified project, code-named “Washtub.”

The FBI didn’t trust the native population .

“Eskimo, Indian and Aleut groups in the Territory should be avoided in view of their propensities to drink to excess and their fundamental indifference to constituted governments and political philosophies. It is pointed out that their prime concern is with survival and their allegiance would easily shift to any power in control,” insisted the founders of the program.

Not everyone is welcoming of U.S. law enforcement authorities.

At the Sochi Olympics, a restaurant billboard indicated, “We do not serve FBI and CIA agents,” Ground Report writes.

Associated Press photographer Jae C. Hong spotted the wooden billboard outside an eatery in Sochi.

Another sign read, “We remember the Cold War.”

The CIA’s primary mission was the Soviet Union during the Cold War, Ground Report wrote.

No Shortage of Conspiracy Theories As 50th Anniversary of JFK’s Assassination Comes Friday

As the U.S. remembers the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s assassination Friday, there is no shortage of conspiracy theories.

Depending on whom you ask, JFK was killed by the CIA, the mafia, Cuban exile groups, the FBI, southern segregationists or the Soviet Union.

The way author and attorney Craig Zirbel sees it, there are only two explanations for President John F. Kennedy’s assassination – either he was killed by a lone gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald, with no motive, or there’s a more complex theory, the Arizona Republic reports.

The Scottsdale attorney has written two books on JFK’s death: “The Texas Connection” in 1991 and “The Final Chapter on the Assassination of John F. Kennedy” in 2010.

He believes Lyndon B. Johnson was behind the assassination 50 years ago Friday.

British Intelligence Assisted FBI in Tracking Charlie Chaplin

MI5, the British intelligence agency, cooperated with J Edgar Hoover’s FBI in tracking the actor Charlie Chaplin in the 1950s for alleged communist sympathies, reports the Guardian.

Describing Chaplin as “Hollywood’s parlour Bolsheviks,” the FBI asked MI5 for cooperation in having him banned from the US. MI5 put together “extensive personal files” on the actor, files which are now being released publicly, according to the Guardian.

“Chaplin has given funds to communist front organisations … He has been involved in paternity and abortion cases,” a Washington-based MI5 liaison warned in October of 1952.

“There is a great deal of good in communism. We can use the good and segregate the bad,” Chaplin had told an American Soviet group in Los Angeles in, according to the files.

Eventually, MI5 found no evidence of Chaplin being a threat.

“We have no trace in our records of this man, nor are we satisfied that there are any reliable grounds for regarding him as a security risk,” Sir Percy Sillitoe, then head of MI5, told the chief police commissioner in South Africa, where Chaplin was planning a visit, according to the paper.
