Former FBI Director Louis Freeh remained hospitalized Wednesday but officials remained tight-lipped about his condition, the Burlington Free Press reports.

Freeh, 64, of Wilmington, Del, crashed his SUV on a rural stretch of southern Vermont on Monday and has been in the hospital since under armed guard.

Authorities said no drugs or alcohol were involved.

The special protection is in place because of Freeh’s work against terrorists.

The accident remains under investigation.

Neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to play a role in the car accident that seriously injured former FBI Director Louis Freeh, the Burlington Free Press reports.

Freeh, 64, of Wilmington, Del., remains in serious condition at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. where he’s being protected by armed guards.

The accident happened Monday when Freeh’s 2010 GMC Yukon veered off a rural stretch of road in Vermont.

Investigators found no evidence of brake marks or skids.

Freeh was traveling alone and wearing a seatbelt.

The FBI Agents Association President Reynaldo Tariche issued a statement about former FBI Director Louis Freeh, who was seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash Monday in Vermont.

“On behalf of our members – 12,000 active duty and retired FBI Agents – I want to wish former Director Freeh a speedy recovery. When Louis Freeh was FBI Director, our members knew that he was always there for us, and that he understood the challenges a Special Agent faces in their daily duties. We want Director Freeh to know that we are – and will continue to be – there for him during his recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

CNN reported that the Vermont State Police said that Freeh was driving a GMC Yukon when it went off the road, struck a mailbox and ran over some bushes.

Attorney Gen. Eric Holder Jr., whose likely to get a grilling from Republicans over ATF’s Operation Fast Furious when he appears Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, got some welcome backing on Thursday.

Politico reports that the National Fraternal Order of Police, the country’s largest group of sworn law enforcement officers, fired off a letter the committee chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) expressing its solidarity with Holder. The letter did not mention Fast and Furious.

“The FOP is very proud of the strong and positive working relationship that we have had with Eric Holder, not just for the two years in which he has served as the nation’s ‘top cop,’ but through his long career of public service,” wrote Chuck Canterbury, the organization’s National President, according to Politico. “As the brother of a retired law enforcement officer and one of the most dedicated and experienced law enforcement leaders, General Holder has been a true partner to the FOP and to our nation’s rank-and-file officers.”

The letter also emphasized that Holder has worked with the organization on fiscal challenges and officer safety, Politico reported.

More than 30 Republican lawmakers have asked for Holder’s resignation over Fast and Furious, an operation that encouraged Arizona gun dealers to sell to middlemen or “straw purchasers”, all with the hopes of tracing the weapons to the Mexican cartels.  ATF lost track of many guns, some of which surfaced at crime scenes on both sides of the border.

Holder testified before Congress earlier this year that he only learned of the operation after the controversy over it surfaced. But some Republican lawmakers believe he has been less forthright about when he learned of the matter and have asked for him to step down.

It comes as no surprise that Anderson is stepping down. The new U.S. Attorney is expected to be Tristram Coffin.

BURLINGTON, Vt. — Vermont’s U.S. Attorney Thomas Anderson announced late Friday that he will leave his post Feb. 28. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul J. Van de Graaf will serve as acting U.S. attorney on that date, according to a news release.
Anderson was nominated as U.S. attorney by President George Bush in 2006. Acting on the recommendation of Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., President Barack Obama is expected to name Burlington attorney Tristram Coffin as the new U.S. attorney soon.
Anderson has accepted a job with the Justice Department in Washington, the news release said.
The U.S. Attorney Office in Vermont has 18 assistant attorneys and is responsible for conducting all federal criminal prosecutions and civil litigation in Vermont involving the United States.
