FBI Releases Training Video on Notifying Family Members of Loved One’s Death

It’s one of the most difficult parts of the job – telling family members they’ve lost a loved one.

To better train law enforcement and first responders on handling the notification of family members of a death, the FBI joined up with Penn State University to create a no-cost website.

The idea was “to better equip law enforcement personnel, victim advocates, coroners, medical examiners, chaplains, hospital staff, and others who find themselves delivering death notifications to do so with professionalism, dignity, and compassion. Not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because the way a death notification is made can have a significant impact on a family’s grieving process and on potential future prosecutions,” the FBI wrote in a press release.

The training, called “We Regret to Inform You …” is available at www.deathnotification.psu.edu.

Strange Collection of ‘Whitey’ Bulger Belongings to Be Auctioned Off

A mannequin with a cat on its head. Nine fedoras. A collection of porcelain cats.

All belonged to convicted mobster James “Whitey” Bulger, who was sentenced to life in prison last month.

The items are among a number of his possessions that are being auctioned off, The Las Vegas Guardian Express reports.

The proceeds will go to his victims.

“The reality is there are lots of people who would be willing to pay money for some or all of the contents of that apartment, and that money is going to victims and victims’ families. So we want to do what we can to get as much money as we can for them,” First Assistant US Attorney Jack Pirozzolo said.

A family of one of James “Whitey” Bulger’s alleged victims can proceed with a federal lawsuit against FBI agents who monitored the mobster-turned-informant, a federal judge ruled Thursday, the Boston Globe reports.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge William Young follows an appeals court ruling that the case is null because the statute of limitations had expired.

The Boston Globe reported that the family of one of Bulger’s victims, Michael Donahue, can continue suing the federal government because the appeals court failed to consider the merits of the case

The family claims the FBI agents who were monitoring Bulger did nothing to stop his reign of terror.
