A Volkswagen executive has been arrested by the FBI on charges of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. over diesel emissions, the New York Times reports

Oliver Schmidt is expected to be arraigned on Monday in Miami. The case is out of Detroit.

Schmidt, who led the automaker’s regulatory compliance office in the U.S. from 2014 to March 2015, is accused of fabricating data that suggested excess emissions were caused by technical problems, not cheating.

A Volkswagen spokeswoman said the automaker “continues to cooperate with the Department of Justice” but that “it would not be appropriate to comment on any ongoing investigations or to discuss personnel matters.”

Looking for help with its emission scandal, Volkswagen is reportedly planning to hire former FBI Director Louis Freeh.

The automaker wants Freeh to deal with investigators who are probing the alleged manipulation of diesel-emissions test, Fox Business reports.

Freeh currently operates a risk management group called Freeh Group International Solutions.

Interestingly, Freeh wouldn’t be the only former FBI director involved in the case. Robert Mueller, who served 12 years at the helm before retiring in 2013 has been named the “settlement master” to deal with 500 lawsuits against the company.

The Justice has accused Volkswagen of violating the Clean Air Act and is seeking as much as $46 million in a suit against the automaker.

Ex-FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III has been named the “settlement master” to settle hundreds of Volkswagen lawsuits, Reuters reports.

Reuters reports that a federal judge in California overseeing more than 500 lawsuits filed against Volkswagen AG over its excess diesel emissions named Mueller to that post earlier in the week.

Mueller, a private attorney in Washington, will “use his considerable experience and judgment to facilitate settlement discussions among the various parties in these complex matters,” U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer wrote.
