A former New York state senator who was convicted of lying to FBI agents was sentenced to six months of house arrest on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

The once-powerful Republican lawmaker, Thomas Libous, lied to agents about a public corruption investigation.

A judge said Libous, 62, would have been sent to prison if he didn’t have terminal cancer.

Libous was accused of pledging to steer business to a law firm if it hired his son.

Authorities also said his son’s salary was supposed to be financed by a lobbying firm.
