New York Times

One night last summer, Jarvis Britton of Birmingham, Ala., sent out a series of Twitter messages that he later described as “stupid” jokes. Prosecutors did not think they were funny.

When Secret Service agents showed up at his house to question him, Mr. Britton said he had been drunk and apologized. But in September, he posted another round of death threats against President Obama and was arrested. Last month, he was sentenced to a year in federal prison.

“Because of the repeated threats on Twitter, we took him seriously,” said Joyce White Vance, the United States attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, who prosecuted the case.

GOP Resistance to Confirming Todd Jones as ATF Director is Stiffening

Todd Jones

Anyone who follows politics inside the Beltway knows the confirmation process for ATF director, by it’s nature, is challenging.

That’s certainly the case with Minnesota U.S. Attorney B. Todd Jones, who has been the acting head of ATF.

Kevin Diaz of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that GOP resistance to Jone’s confirmation is “stiffening.”

The paper reports that Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday requested that top federal law enforcement officials in Washington turn over documents that might reveal “conflicts” with Jones.

The requests were made in a series of letters from Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley, the paper reported.

The paper writes:

The letters, obtained by the Star Tribune, allude to three unnamed witnesses, presumably all law enforcement officials in Minnesota, who reportedly talked privately to Grassley’s staff. Sources close to the matter say they are afraid to come forward for fear of retaliation. Nevertheless, Grassley cited them to contradict Jones’ testimony before the Senate last month that he was unaware of any “deterioration” in relations between his office and law enforcement agencies in Minnesota.

The letters also refer indirectly to a whistleblower complaint brought against Jones by Jeffrey Paulsen, an assistant U.S. attorney in Minneapolis, who says he was unfairly disciplined by Jones for raising management concerns.

Former FBI Director Louis Freeh was appointed by federal judges to investigate a court-supervised administrator of BP’s multibillion-dollar settlement, the Associated Press reports.

Freeh, a private consultant, was named a “special master” by U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier.

Freeh is to investigate whether an attorney on the staff of claims administrator, Patrick Juneau, received inappropriate payments.

The AP reported that Juneau is accused of receiving a portion of the settlement proceeds before he started working on the deal.

Sheriff’s deputies in the  Los Angeles area  are accused of unlawfully targeting black residents in public housing, the Associated Press reports.

Deputies for the Lancaster and Palmdale Sheriff’s Departments are under investigation for allegedly making unnecessary stops, seizures and force.

The findings follow a two-year investigation, the AP reported.

“While our investigation showed significant problems in LASD’s Antelope Valley stations, we are confident that we will be able to reach an agreement that will provide meaningful and sustainable reform,” Roy Austin Jr., deputy assistant attorney general, told the AP.

Border Patrol Seeks Weaponizing Domestic Drones Amid Serious Questions

Border Patrol officials are hoping to soon use “non-lethal weapons designed to immobilize” people on surveillance drones, the Atlantic reports.

The discovery comes from documents obtained by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

“This is the first we’ve heard of any federal agency proposing using weapons on drones flown domestically,” the EFF wrote. “The CBP has, without broader public discussion, considered this stop – combined with the fact that he agency is planning to sharply increase the number of drones it flies – should cause some serious concern for Americans.”

Attorney General Eric Holder has previously said that the president doesn’t have the authority to use weapons on drones to kill Americans not engaged in combat on American soil, the Atlantic wrote.

Voice recordings of accused mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger were played at his murder and racketeering trial Tuesday, showing a different side than the relatively quiet defendant that the juror has so far seen, the Boston Globe reports.

The recordings capture Bulger talking about murder, guns and funneling cash.

“Pa-pa-pa-pa-pow,” whispered Bulger, during the recorded conversation on Oct. 13, as he mimicked the sound of machine gun fire.

Bulger was referring to a tavern owner gunned down in a Dorchester phone booth in 1975.

Bulger’s jail conversation with his niece and nephew occurred through a glass partition at the Plymouth County Correctional Facility, the Boston Globe wrote.
