Documentary on the Detroit Sleeper Cell that Wasn’t

DETROIT — It’s been about a decade since the “Detroit Sleeper Cell”  case imploded and ended up being a big embarrassment to the Justice Department and the FBI.

You might recall, shortly after Sept. 11, 2001,  four men were charged in Detroit with operating a sleeper cell that was plotting to pull off terrorist acts.  In 2003, two of the four men were convicted of terrorism charges.

But the defense learned that the government withheld information that might have helped their clients, and eventually in 2004 U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen vacated the terrorism convictions. Essentially, the judge concluded the case was nonsense.

The Retro Report, a documentary organization, has partnered with the New York Times, to produce an 11 minute, 45 second  documentary, “The Detroit Sleeper Cell.” The documentary was released Monday.

The documentary takes a look back at the case and talks to some  key players, including former prosecutor Keith Corbett who assisted the lede prosecutor RIchard Convertino on the case.

“I think we overreacted in the post 9/11 world,” Corbett says in the documentary. “I think we were looking for the boogeyman under every bed. I think in hindsight a couple deep breaths would have server everybody better.”

You’ve probably heard of the millions of Americans who say they’ve lost their insurance plan because of the Affordable Care Act requirements.

Among those unlucky souls is a former Secret Service agent, the Washington Times reports.

Dan Bongino, who was a Secret Service agent for 12 years under the Clinton and Obama administrations, said he’s been notified by mail that his coverage is about to be canceled, the Washington Times wrote.

The letter stated: “Your current benefit plan does not conform to these new [Obamacare] mandates.”

Does Bongino have ulterior motives, though? He’s running as a Republican.

Border Patrol Chief: ‘Alarming’ Alcohol Problem Among Agency’s Staff

The U.S. Border Patrol has an “alarming” and “detrimental” alcohol problem among its agents, according to an internal memo from the agency’s chief, ABC News 10 reports.

“The Border Patrol is averaging almost two alcohol-related arrests per week,” U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael Fisher wrote in the memo. “This continued level and rate of alcohol-related arrests within our agency is alarming and detrimental to the overall well-being of our workforce.”

Among the concerns is that agents are turning up to work under the influence of alcohol while possessing automatic weapons.

“People are showing up to work drunk,” said one agent who spoke with Team 10 under the condition of anonymity. “I want to see this addressed and to end the secrecy of what’s going on.”

A mysterious hacking group is breaching federal computer systems and gaining access to thousands of people’s personal information, Fox News reports.

The FBI issued warnings to federal agencies that the hackers, who are associated with Anonymous, may becoming more widespread.

So far, the agencies affected were the U.S. Army, Department of Energy and the Department of Health and Human Services.

The campaign has been going on for about a year and appears to be an act of retaliation for the prosecution of other hackers, Fox reported.

Former FBI Agent Convinced JFK Assassination Was CIA Plot

William Turner isn’t just any conspiracy theorist.

An FBI agent from 1951 to 1961, Turner was working as a journalist when John F. Kennedy was assassinated. He was a trained investigator and wanted to learn more about the breakdown in security that November day in 1963, CBS 13 reports.

During his investigation, Turner believed there were two shooters and eventually would conclude that the CIA choreographed JFK’s murder.

“I believe the mafia was allied with the CIA in assassinating Kennedy, and I think we’ve proven that and should go ahead with closure — designating it a conspiracy and not a single man’s work,” Turner told CBS 13.
