The FBI is investigating a potential corruption scandal involving the NYPD and two businessmen with close relationships to New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The probe involves gifts and foreign trips that the businessmen may have given in exchange for favors, the New York Post reports.

The businessmen – Jona Rechnitz and Jeremy Reichberg – are suspected of paying for airfare, hotel bills and gifts for some NYPD officials.

The trips were to places such as Israel, London, Las Vegas, Rome and the Caribbean.

“A number of my members have been interviewed by federal investigators,” Captains Endowment Association President Roy Richter said. “All of them fully cooperated and were told they were not the targets or subject of the investigation.’’

Rechnitz denied wrongdoing.

“I have done nothing wrong and have not engaged in any inappropriate behavior with anyone connected to the NYPD,’’ Rechnitz told The Post. “Beyond that, I don’t have any comment.’’

FBI Offers to Help Local Law Enforcement Unlock iPhones for Investigations

The FBI is offering to help local law enforcement bypass security features on the iPhone.

“In mid-March, an outside party demonstrated to the FBI a possible method for unlocking the iPhone,” the letter obtained by BuzzFeed News reads. “That method for unlocking that specific iPhone proved successful.”

The letter, in response to questions from local law enforcement about the technique used to open the phone, continued, “We are in this together.”

Numerous law enforcement agencies have reported trouble opening locked iPhones.

Apple has refused to help, saying it would set a dangerous precedent that would compromise the security and privacy of the phones.

The FBI said its method for opening an iPhone is classified.

Justice Department Reviewing ‘Panama Papers’ to Determine if U.S. Laws Were Violated

The Justice Department is investigating the so-called Panama Papers to determine if global politicians and public figures broke the law.

“The U.S. Department of Justice takes very seriously all credible allegations of high level, foreign corruption that might have a link to the United States or the U.S. financial system,” Peter Carr, spokesman for the Justice Department’s criminal division, told Reuters.

The 11.5 million leaked files came from a Panama law firm, which specializes in creating offshore bank accounts.

The “Panama Papers” were published by numerous news organizations, revealing financial arrangements involving tens of thousands of rich and powerful people.

“In spite of some of the lack of transparency that exists in many of these transactions, there are determined experts, at both the Department of Treasury and the Department of Justice who can examine these transactions,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.

NYT: Border Patrol Makes Bizarre Choice Endorsing Donald Trump for President

Border PatrolBy Editorial Board
New York Times

Turn away, for a moment, from the generalized idiocy of the presidential campaign to consider a specific instance of monumental dimness. It happened Wednesday.

The National Border Patrol Council, which says it represents 16,500 border agents, endorsed Donald Trump. It says it has never endorsed a presidential candidate in a primary before, but these are dire times.

“There is no greater physical or economic threat to Americans today than our open border,” says the endorsement, signed by the council’s president, Brandon Judd. The union “asks the American people to support Mr. Trump in his mission to finally secure the border of the United States of America, before it is too late.”

Too late for what? The collapse of America, apparently, from the “gangs, cartels and violent criminals preying on the innocent.”

It’s tempting to dismiss this as the usual politicized cop-talk, par for today’s course. But it’s far more dangerous and fraudulent than that. The lies behind it have preoccupied the country for a generation, consuming billions of dollars for miles of walls, razor wire, drones, sensors and a surge of agents and troops.

Despite the union’s apocalyptic warnings, the border is more militarized than ever, and arrests there are at historic lows. Illegal immigration has been falling for years. More Mexicans are leaving the country than entering. President Obama, far from abandoning immigration enforcement, has deported more people — more than two million — more quickly than his predecessors. A recent migrant influx in Texas consists of terrorized mothers and children fleeing Central America, trying legally to seek asylum. They deserve protection and the due process of law, not the administration’s aggressive efforts to deter and deport them.

How CIA Left Behind Explosives in School Bus for Special-Needs Students

The CIA left explosive material in the engine compartment of a school bus for special-needs students after a bomb-sniffing exercise.

The exercise last week took place at Briar Woods High School, which is about a half hour from the CIA’s headquarters in northern Virginia. Students were on spring break at the time.

The explosive material was found by a mechanic during a routine maintenance check on Wednesday, Richmond.com reports.

The live explosives were left behind because the CIA lost track of them.

Dean Boyd, a CIA spokesman, confirmed the training team left behind “explosive material used as a training device for K-9s. This material is commonly used by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to train K-9s in explosives detection.”

The agency “has taken immediate steps to strengthen inventory and control procedures in its K-9 program to prevent such incidents from happening again,” Boyd said, noting that the CIA has done a full inventory of explosive material used in the training program. “CIA is a part of the Northern Virginia community and we will do whatever it takes to prevent this from happening again.”
