FBI Seeks Peaceful Ending to Armed Standoff at Federal Building in Oregon

A march on Saturday to protest father-and-son ranchers who were convicted of arson has escalated to an armed occupation of a federal building in Oregon.

There’s just one problem: The protesters haven’t said what they want, CNN reports.

Armed protesters took over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge building near Burns.

“We will be here as long as it takes,” protest spokesman Ammon Bundy told CNN by phone from inside the refuge.

“We have no intentions of using force upon anyone, (but) if force is used against us, we would defend ourselves.”

Bundy is the son of Cliven Bundy, the rancher who instigated a standoff with federal authorities in Nevada.

“This is about taking the correct stand without harming anybody to restore the land and resources to the people so people across the country can begin thriving again,” he said.

Federal authorities said they are trying to avoid violence and so far have taken a patient approach.

Would travelers be safer if TSA agents were armed?

The answer is no, said U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who opposes the idea, UPI reports.

The question was raised again after a shooting at Los Angeles International Airport over the weekend.

Mass shootings “can’t be the new normal,” Holder said.

“Now, that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t review the measures that are in place to keep people safe from the time that they get out of their cars and go into the terminals,” he said.

Reports that the FBI is sending an army of armed agents to the 2012 Olympics just ain’t true, at least according to the a Brit official.

The website News24 reported that Chris Allison, the national security co-ordinator for the games, “sharply rejected reports that armed FBI agents would be taking part in securing the games, insisting on Tuesday that Britain did not need outside help to keep the event safe.”

Specifically, he rejected reports in the Guardian newspaper that said the U.S. would send armed FBI agents to protect U.S. interests.

“There will be no foreign armed personnel here,” Allison said, according to the site.

The 23-year-old armed man who was arrested Sunday at a North Carolina airport after President Obama took off appears to be harmless and was nothing more than a “cop wannabe’, a law enforcement source told ticklethewire.com.

Airport police at the Asheville Regional Airport in North Carolina on Sunday arrested Joseph Sean McVey, 23, of Coshocton, Ohio, who was armed and showed up at the airport parking lot just after President Obama had departed, the Associated Press reported.

Authorities say the man had come to see the president and had police gear in his car including a siren and flashing lights, AP reported. He also had an invalid driver’s license.

But a law enforcement source said the man uttered no threats and was just into being a cop. He supposedly had more than two dozen antennas on his car.

AP reported that he was charged with a going armed in terror of the public, a misdemeanor.
