Federal investigators responding to a report of a suspicious package outside of an elementary school in Alabama found a device with wires and a timer.

The ATF, FBI and local police responded to a bomb threat at Magnolia Elementary School and were surprised by what they found, AL.com reports.

According to a caller, a Latino man placed the package in front of the school.

The device, which was found on a pickup truck in the school parking lot, contained actual bomb components.

“We did find a small amount of what we believe to be an actual explosive,”  said Dave Hyche, ATF’s assistant special agent in charge in Alabama.

Authorities detonated the device in nearby woods.

Federal officials said the investigation could be lengthy.

The anti-Muslim militia group in Kansas that is accused of conspiring to bomb an apartment where 120 Somali immigrants lived was exposed when one of its members contacted the FBI.

The member of the group, “The Crusaders,” was alarmed by talks of violence and agreed to become a confidential source for the FBI, CBS News reports.

Three militia members were charged with conspiring to detonate truck bomb at the apartment complex in Garden City.

Patrick Stein, 47; Gavin Wright, 51; and Curtis Allen, 49, have been charged with conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction.

Thanks to the informant, the FBI was able to monitor the group for months as the plot became more specific. The informant introduced an undercover FBI agent to the group.

The FBI is investigating the discovery of an explosive device in a backpack outside a police department in a small Colorado town.

The bag was found by a Nederland place detective and discovered “suspicious articles” that were later deemed to be an improvised explosive device, police Marshal Paul Carrill said, the Associated Press reports.

The backpack was searched by two robots, and the device was found to be active but failed to detonate.

“It’s difficult to interpret why someone would do this,” said Carrill, who declined to disclose if police have identified the backpack’s owner. “It is my hope and intent, for the health and safety of the community to get to the bottom of why.”

Carroll is asking the public to come forward with information because “the individual or individuals who may have assembled this could be a risk to their neighbors.”

The FBI is searching for two men who were spotted removing an improvised explosive device from luggage on a sidewalk in New York City over the weekend.

Surveillance video shows the men taking the luggage but leaving the bomb behind.

The device was near another bomb that detonated on West 23rd Street in Manhattan on Saturday night, injuring more than 25 people. The men were captured on surveillance between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., the same period when the other bomb exploded.

In a statement, the bureau said, “The FBI is interested in speaking to these individuals and recovering the luggage.”

Police arrested Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, in connection with the bomb that had detonated. It’s unclear whether the other men in the video are connected to Rahami.

A Houston boat repairman accused of plotting to bomb an apartment building was charged in federal court Monday.

Cary Lee Ogborn’s alleged plot was thwarted by an undercover FBI agent, the Houston Chronicle reports.

“With terrorism, you don’t want to be reactive,” said Shauna Dunlap, spokeswoman for the FBI in Houston. “Our goal is to detect and deter events before they occur. An effective way to do this is through an undercover operation.”

The 50-year-old’s arrest Friday came after he received a package online that he thought contained dynamite, a grenade and a remote detonator.

According to the FBI, Ogborn ordered the explosives online through an underground website, AlphaBay. An FBI agent posed as a vendor and was able to foil the plot.

Authorities arrested him shortly after he picked up the package.

The FBI says it foiled a terrorist attack at a South Florida synagogue.

Agents arrested on Friday a man who is accused of planning to throw an explosive device into the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, WSVN.com reports.

Agents were posing as terrorists and said no one was in danger because the suspect was being monitored.

“I think about, before we had a baby, that we used to go there for services, and God forbid, it could have been us,” said Stephanie Levine. “Thank God they stopped him, but had they not, it would have been such a horrible thing to happen to this neighborhood.”

The man and woman accused of opening fire at a holiday party in San Bernardino came prepared for a massacre.

The ATF said the suspects, who were killed in a shootout with police, were armed with four guns, an explosive device and several magazine of ammunition, NBC News reports.

The suspects had two .223-caliber assault rifles and two semi-automatic handguns.

At least two of the four weapons were legally purchased, according to sources who spoke with NBC News.

“They were in tactical gear and had several mags full of ammunition fashioned to their body so they were ready for a gunfight should that occur,” ATF spokeswoman Meredith Davis said. “With my experiences with other mass shootings, there are indicators this was well-planned out and it was to be violent in nature.”
