The FBI warned Garland police that one of the two gunmen who would open fire outside a cartoon contest to draw Prophet Muhammad in Texas may be targeting the event just hours before the shooting, The New York Times reports.

“We developed information just hours before the event that Simpson might be interested in going to Garland,” FBI Director James Comey told reporters.

Comey was referring to Elton Simpson, 30, who opened fire with Nadir Soofi, 34.

The FBI had investigated Simpson in the past and reopened the investigation in March flowing tweets about ISIS.

Even before the warning about Simpson, the FBI notified local officials that the cartoon even may be targeted by terrorists.

One of the gunmen behind the shooting at a Texas cartoon contest that featured images of Prophet Muhammad strongly hinted on Twitter that he was about to get violent about 20 minutes before opening fire, the Chicago Tribune reports.

“May Allah accept us as mujahideen,” or holy warriors, he tweeted.

One of his hashtags read: “#texasattack.”

Federal authorities were tracking 31-year-old Elton Simpson’s Twitter account and even had an open investigation on him at the time.

Homeland Security and the FBI also issued bulletins to local law enforcement, warning that the cartoon contest in Garland was a possible terrorism target.

Simpson and his roommate, Nadir Soofi, were killed, but not before shooting a security guard in the leg.

The FBI is investigating what prompted two men to open fire outside a contest for Prophet Mohamed cartoons in a Dallas suburb.

The man were fatally shot by police, Sunday night, CNN reports.

Garland Police said the men approached the Culwell Event Center in North Garland and opened fire. A security guard was shot in the leg.

“The first suspect was shot immediately,” Garland Mayor Douglas Athas told CNN. “The second suspect was wounded and reached for his backpack. He was shot again.”

Authorities have not yet released the gunmen’s identity.

“We have no other indication that anyone else was involved,” Athas said.

Some cartoons simply aren’t funny.

The Secret Service and FBI are investigating who faxed a racially charged cartoon to the White House and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex),  the Houston Chronicle reported.

The cartoon depicted nooses and lynching posts, the paper reported. The headline included a racial epithet and the cartoon also included two L-shaped lynching posts with “Sheila Jackson Lee” written on one cross bar and “Hussein Obama” written on the second cross bar, the Houston Chronicle reported. The return address on the fax said: “Defecating on Obama.”

“We are aware of the cartoon, and we are taking appropriate measures,” said Secret Service spokesman Robert Novy, according to the Chronicle.
