Homeland Security’s former acting inspector general has been indicted on charges of stealing government proprietary software and databases containing personal information on more than 250,000 government employees – all in an effort to elevate his private business.

Charles K. Edwards, who was tasked with exposing waste, fraud and abuse as acting inspector general from 2011 to 2013, was indicted on 16 counts, Washington Post reports.

His 54-year-old former subordinate, Murali Yamazula Venkata, also was charged with similar crimes and destroying records.

Edwards, 59, of Sandy Springs, Md., and Venkata are accused of conspiring to steal property information from the inspector general’s office from October 2014 to April 2017. Prosecutors say the theft enabled Edwards’ company, Delta Business Solutions, to sell an enhanced version to the Agriculture Department.

The DHS and Postal Service investigation is ongoing.

The former watchdog for the Department of Homeland Security has been placed on leave following a report that he ignored serious problems to satisfy senior Obama administration officials, the Washington Post reports.

The news comes a day after the Post reported that former Inspector General Charles K. Edwards had “altered and delayed investigations at the request of senior administration officials, compromising his independent role as an inspector general.”

Edwards, who served as DHS inspector general from 2011 until this past December, was tasked with overseeing the performance of the department’s 225,000 employees and a $39 billion budget.

But the Post reports that Edwards’ objectivity was compromised because of his cozy relationship with top Justice Department leaders and advisers to then-Secretary Janet Napolitano.

Among the accusations: He hired his wife, misused travel funds and tried to conceal a Secret Service prostitution scandal.

Edwards was reassigned to the department’s science and technology directorate, the L.A. Times wrote.

The top overseer of the Homeland Security Department told a House committee that turf battles over internal public corruption investigations had subsided, the Center for Investigative Reporting reports.

But acting Inspector General Charles K. Edwards wouldn’t answer questions about an ongoing investigation of a Texas branch office.

Edwards said his 219 investigators are on top of the nearly 1,600 cases of accusations of employee misconduct.

Several agents and top officials are the subject of an investigation in Texas over allegedly doctored reports ahead of an internal inspection.
