Sen. Schumer: Trump’s Plans to Cut TSA Budget by 11% Is Dangerous

President Trump’s plans to cut 11% from the TSA’s budget would “spell real trouble for security,” Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday.

The cuts are meant to free up money to increase funding for immigration enforcement programs and the construction of a wall along the Mexico border.

Schumer, D-N.Y., called the cuts a “cash raid for the borer wall,” Newsday reports.

“You’re not going to quietly pillage the federal funds that protect New York on my watch,” said Schumer, who serves as the Senate Minority Leader, directing his message at the White House.

Under Trump’s plans, the Coast Guard also would be cut by 14%.

The TSA cuts would eliminate a $20 million program to train flight crew members in firearms training in the event of a hijacking. The plan also calls for cutting $45 million in grants for local law enforcement to increase patrols in and around airports.

NY Daily News Editorial: FBI Director Robert Mueller Must Stop Shutting Out NYPD

Director Mueller testifying on the Hill/fbi file photo

The pettiness was appalling as FBI Director Robert Mueller explained why the feds had left Police Commissioner Ray Kelly out of the loop on the underwear bomb plot.

“As I told Ray, he’s always welcome to call,” Mueller said. Question, Mr. G-man: Must Kelly say, “Pretty please,” too?

Mueller’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday was disturbing. Heretofore, he had shown no tolerance for the guerrilla warfare his terror fighters have waged against the NYPD. But his remarks under questioning by Sen. Chuck Schumer suggested infection by the same strain of professional jealousy.

Too many in the FBI chafed as Kelly built a domestic and international intelligence division that has been crucial to protecting New York. The force has foiled numerous homegrown plots.

No Surprise: Senate Report Says U.S. Guns Going to Mexican Drug Traffickers at Alarming Rate; Makes Recommendations

Certainly this comes as no surprise.

A Congressional report released Monday concludes that American military-style weapons are arming Mexico’s violent drug organizations at an alarming rate and policy makers are not adequately responding.

“Congress has been virtually moribund while powerful Mexican drug trafficking organizations continue to gain unfettered access to military-style firearms coming from the United States,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), one of three Senators who issued the report. The others were Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.).

“New ATF data provided last week reveals that more than 70 percent of firearms recovered at crime scenes and traced by Mexican officials actually originated in the United States<” Feinstein said.

Sen. Schumer added:  “This report confirms what many of us already know to be true: although the Senate’s recently passed border measure will help make our Southern border safer, it is still too easy for Mexican drug lords to get their hands on deadly military-grade weapons within our borders. “We need to redouble our efforts to keep violent firearms out of the hands of these traffickers.”

The report recommends legislation to make it tougher to buy weapons at guns shows: better enforcement of the existing ban on imports of military-style weapons; reinstatement of the expired Assault Weapons Ban; reporting by Federal Firearms Licensees on all multiple firearms sales; and Senate ratification of the Inter-American Convention Against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking of Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives and Other Related Materials (CIFTA).
