Help on Way for Alabama Prison Where Female Inmates Raped, Beaten

By Steve Neavling

The Justice Department has reached an agreement with the state of Alabama to undergo monitoring and serious reforms following years of complaints about female inmates being sexually assaulted by corrections staff, the Washington Post reports.

An investigation by the Justice Department found that female inmates lived in a “toxic environment” at the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women in Wetumpka, Ala., where they have been raped and sodomized.

Prison officials even organized a “strip show” with female prisoners and watched the women use the toilet

Women who complained of the abuse were punished, according to the Justice Department

“Prisoners are entitled to be safe from sexual predation by staff, and to live in an environment free from sexual assault, sexual harassment and the constant fear of these abuses,” said Vanita Gupta, the head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

The agreement requires the prison to install a “state-of-the-art camera system,” train staff and implement a program to track and analyze complaints.

Now after 15 years on the lam, the U.S. Marshals Service has joined the hunt for 81-year-old mobster James “Whitey” Bulger, the Boston Globe reported.

A U.S. deputy Marshal has been assigned full time to the FBI-led Bulger Task Force, which is comprised of State Police, FBI agents, and state Department of Correction officers, the Globe reported.

U.S. Marshal John Gibbons issued a statement Thursday saying his agency “has a long-standing reputation as being expert fugitive investigators, and we look forward to providing the FBI with our assistance in this matter. It is our hope that this joint initiative will ultimately lead to the arrest of Bulger so he can face justice.”

Bulger, an FBI informant who is on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list, vanished before his January 1995 federal racketeering indictment in Boston, the Globe reported. He later was charged with 19 murders.

WASHINGTON — An undercover FBI employee posing as an inmate’s brother, helped bust two D.C. corrections officers and a Maryland woman on federal bribery charges for allegedly smuggling cellphones and iPods to prisoners in exchange for cash payments, the Washington Post reported.

Authorities on Tuesday arrested corrections officers Thomas Ford, 35, and Quincy Hayes, 32, who were placed on administrative leave, the Post’s Del Quentin Wilber reported. Both work at the D.C. Correction Treatment Facility, which is run by the Corrections Corporation of America.

Authorities also charged Renee Braxton, 44, a security guard at a museum, the Post reported.

The paper reported that an inmate tipped off the FBI to the contraband smuggling. Subsequently, an undercover FBI employee, posing as an inmate’s brother, “met with Braxton and Ford in 2008 and early this year and gave them several hundred dollars to smuggle a phone, an iPod and a charger to inmates at the CTF,” the Post reported.
