ICE Eyes Idaho Jail As New Location to House Detained Immigrants

An Idaho jail could soon house immigration detainees and eventually be used for immigration hearings as ICE officials look for more detention space.

ICE is looking for a new location after losing access to 300 beds at the Utah County Jail in Spanish Fork, Utah, Magic Valley reports

Local officials said they don’t plan on act on the proposal until ICE provides more details about using the Jerome County Jail in south-central Idaho.

“It’s something ICE is dealing with internally, and Jerome County is kind of just waiting for their response as to what they want to do,” said Commissioner Roger Morley.

Because of a lack of space for detainees, ICE must send undocumented immigrants to Seattle or Salt Lake City.

“(Salt Lake City) believes the addition of 50 beds at Jerome County Detention Center would allow for streamlined detention operations and facilitate fewer and less frequent transfers of detainees out of state,” according to a document obtained by Magic Valley.

A 46-year-old immigrant died while in federal custody in North Hollywood, a neighborhood in Los Angeles.

City News Service reports that the man died last week after collapsing while playing soccer at the Adelanto Detention Facility.

Vicente Caceres-Maradiaga, a Honduran national, was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead after 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Caceres-Maradiaga was arrested on May 22.

“His removal case was pending before the immigration courts at the time of his death,” according to an ICE statement. “Records indicate that Mr. Caceres, who was never lawfully admitted to the U.S., has had two prior criminal convictions since 2011, one for DUI and one for fraud.”

Authorities said the preliminary cause of death was acute coronary syndrome.

Caceres-Maradiaga became the ninth ICE detainee to die in the agency’s custody during the 2016-17 fiscal year, which started on Oct. 1.

City of Joliet Considers New Detention Center for Immigrants

The city of Joliet in Illinois could be home to a new detention center for immigrants facing deportation after residents of suburban Crete derailed a similar plan in their city, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Joliet officials are considering the plan but were short on specifics.

The Tribune said City Manager Tom Thanas met with ICE officials last week in Washington to discuss the issue.

City Council members were briefed on the proposal during a closed-door session last week, the Tribune reported.

“I don’t know enough about it at this point to offer an informed opinion,” Councilwoman Jan Quillman told the tribune. “My understanding is that this is all very preliminary.”

ICE has been looking for a site near Chicago where a private company would build and operate the detention center.
