U.S. Authorities Worried That Next Terror Plot Could Originate from ISIS Terrorists

Authorities are worried that the next 9/11-like terror plot could come from the increasingly violent Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) that is claiming to have killed about 1,700 Iraqi soldiers, CBS News reports.

The situation is getting increasingly more dangerous as Islamic militants continue to sweep through Iraq.

“You’ve got motivation mixed with opportunity, ideology and foreign fighters and all of that looks like a very extreme version of Afghanistan in the ’90s, plus what was happening in Iraq after the Iraq war,” said CBS News National Security Analyst Juan Zarate. “This is a cauldron of future terrorist threats to the west.”

Zarate said the group poses dangers to the U.S.

“I think the grave threat here is that you have the seeds of a new terrorist movement emerging very aggressively.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham agrees.

“The seeds of 9/11s are being planted all over Iraq and Syria,” Graham said. “They want an Islamic caliphate that runs through Syria and Iraq…and they plan to drive us out of the Mideast by attacking us here at home.”

A 22-year-old Pennsylvania man was indicted in Virginia on Thursday on charges of using the Internet to solicit Islamic extremists to commit terrorist acts on such targets as police stations and synagogues within the U.S. and posting bomb-making instructions.

Emerson Winfield Begolly, of New Bethlehem, Pa., was indicted by a federal grand jury in Alexandria, Va.

“Emerson Begolly is accused of repeatedly using the Internet to promote violent jihad against Americans,” said U.S. Attorney Neil H. MacBride. “These allegations demonstrate how young people in the United States can become influenced by – and eventually participate in – jihadist propaganda that is a serious threat to the safety of us all.”

Authorities alleged that Begolly has been an active moderator of a popular, internationally known Islamic extremist web forum, the Ansar al-Mujahideen English Forum (AMEF).

Authorities charged that since July 2010, Begolly has placed a number of postings encouraging attacks within the United States, including the use of firearms, explosives and propane tanks against targets such as police stations, post offices, synagogues, military facilities, train lines, bridges, cell phone towers and water plants.

In the post-9/11 era, some Islamic groups complained about being indiscriminately targeted simply because of their heritage.

Now The Jackson Clarion Ledger is reporting that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Oxford, Miss., targeted “convenience store operators in north Mississippi, many of Middle Eastern descent, despite a lack of any connection to terrorism, according to documents obtained by” the paper. Some civil rights advocates have raised questions.

The paper said the “convenience store initiative” arose from the meetings with local law enforcement in the years after Sept. 11, 2001.

U.S. Attorney Jim Greenlee told the paper authorities were “looking to see any links to terrorism, but what we found was criminal conduct.” Many were arrested for such violations as selling excessive amounts of pseudoephedrine, which can be used to make meth.
