Ultimate Betrayal: Son Testifies Against Mobster Dad and Wore FBI Wire

It may be one of the ultimate betrayals in mob history, and certainly there have been no shortage of them. There was of course the very famous one: Gambino Underboss Sammy the Bull” Gravano turning on the top boss John Gotti.

But this one, according to the New York Daily News, may top them all: John Franzese Jr, 50, wore an FBI wire  and testified against his 93-year-old mobster dad John “Sonny” Franzese, an underboss in the Colombo crime family. The racketeering and extortion trial is currently underway in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn.

“The long decline of the mob has been marked by underlings ratting out bosses and even bosses ratting out everybody, but never before had a son taken the witness stand against his dad,” wrote N.Y. Daily News columnist Michael Daly.

“The betrayal was all the more remarkable because the son had no compelling reason for being up there with his left hand in his pocket and his right hand raised to take the oath,” Daily wrote.

“The younger Franzese was not working off a prison term or eluding prosecution. He did not even harbor manifest anger toward the 93-year-old father he pointed out at the defense table.”

New York mobster Joseph O’Kane, who testified as a defense witness for friend John Gotti Jr. last fall, has been murdered in prison, the website  Gangland News reported.

Joseph O’Kane, 44,  was stabbed to death by a fellow inmate on Sunday in his cell block at a high-security prison in Waymart, Penn., the website reported. The Bureau of Prisons simply listed him on its website  as “deceased”.

His lawyer Joseph Corozzo told the N.Y. Daily News: “It was under investigation, and the prison was on lockdown. He was well-respected in the facility, and I was unaware of any problems with any other inmates or with prison officials. That’s why this is so shocking.”

O’Kane was serving a life sentence for a 1999 murder and racketeering conviction. He testified to counter testimony by government witness John Alite. The jury deadlocked and a mistrial was declared. It was Gotti’s fourth mistrial in five years because of a deadlocked jury. The U.S. Attorney’s Office finally agreed to wave the white flag and not go after Gotti for a fifth time.

WASHINGTON — On Monday, for the second time in less than a week, a federal judge declared a mistrial in a high profile Justice Department case that captured the interest of many nationwide.

A federal judge in Brooklyn declared a mistrial in the case against Hal Turner, a New Jersey shock jock,White Supremacist and ex-FBI informant who was accused of threatening the lives of three federal Chicago judges who ruled in favor of a gun control case, the Associated Press reported.

A re-trial for Turner, 47, was set for March 1 in Brooklyn. The case was indicted in Chicago, but was moved to New York as part of a change of venue request.

The bad news for prosecutors came nearly a week after a mistrial was declared in Manhattan in the racketeering trial of John Gotti Jr. It was his fourth mistrial in five years. The prosecution has not yet announced whether it will go for a fifth trial.

After the mistrial in Turner’s case, one juror, Richard Gardiner, spoke to reporters and said the jury voted 9 to 3 in favor of acquittal, the AP reported.

As in the Gotti trial, the majority of the jurors in the Turner case thought the government case was weak, the juror said.  The lone juror said he favored conviction.

Can you spell M-I-S-T-R-I-A-L?

Well, it may be too early to assume one will be declared in the racketeering trial of mobster John Gotti Jr., but  it can’t be ruled out at this point.

A federal judge in New York ordered jurors on Thursday to keep deliberating even after they declared themselves deadlocked, according to the New York Daily News.

The jury foreman sent a note to U.S. District Judge  Kevin Castel which said unable to reach a unanimous verdict” on the three counts, the Daily News reported.

Jurors are off Friday and are expected to resume deliberations on Monday.

The fact the jury is deadlocked doesn’t automatically mean there will be a mistrial. Juries have been known to arrive at a verdict even after telling the judge they’re deadlocked.

Informant Says John Gotti’s Neighbor Was Dissolved in Barrel of Acid

Just what everyone suspected for decades. Now a snitch is finally confirming it all.

NEW YORK — The corpse of John Gotti’s Howard Beach neighbor – murdered after he accidentally killed the gangster’s 12-year-old son in a traffic accident – was dissolved in a barrel of acid, an informant says.
John Favara’s grisly fate is disclosed in court papers filed Tuesday in the upcoming racketeering trial of reputed Gambino soldier Charles (Charlie Canig) Carneglia.
He has long been suspected of getting rid of Favara’s body after the father of two was shot in March 1980 on orders of the late Gambino crime boss. Favara’s body has never been found.
Carneglia told a Gambino family associate, who is a government witness, that he disposed of the body by putting it in a barrel of acid, Assistant Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Roger Burlingame said.
