President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to run Homeland Security is retired Marine Gen. John F. Kelly, a border-security hawk who retired in February as chief of the U.S. Southern Command, the Washington Post reports.

Kelly will be responsible for delivering on Trump’s pledge to crack down on illegal immigration.

The 66-year-old general served for more than four four decades and has widespread respect in the military community.

The choice for the position came down down to Kelly and Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, who many conservatives believed wasn’t hawkish enough about border security.

President-elect Donald Trump is considering Marine Gen. John Kelly as head of Homeland Security or secretary of state.

That’s significant because Trump became interested in Kelly after hearing about his hawkish views on the Mexican border, The Washington Times reports.

What caught Trump’s attention was Kelly’s testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee in 2015, when he warned that smuggling routes along the border are vulnerable to terrorists and weapons of mass destruction.

“In my opinion, the relative ease with which human smugglers moved tens of thousands of people to our nation’s doorstep also serves as another warning sign: These smuggling routes are a potential vulnerability to our homeland,” Kelly said at the time.

Kelly is a four-star general who has been endorsed by fellow retired Marine Gen. James Mattis.

A controversial report has surfaced in wake of  the July 11 prison escape of drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

The website, Intercept reports that Presco, an investigative Mexican magazine, is saying that initial reports about the February 2014 arrest of Guzmanin  weren’t true. The media reported back then that the arrest was made by elite Mexican marines, with U.S. federal agencies playing a crucial intelligence support role.

But the magazine, citing U.S. government sources, claims that account is false.

Proceso reports that the agents who arrested Guzmán weren’t Mexicans, but rather Americans –agents from the DEA and and U.S. Marshals Service who were dressed as Mexican marines, working alongside one or more unidentified U.S. intelligence agencies.

Government officials from Mexico and the U.S. have yet to dispute the accuracy of the story, Intercept reports.

CNN reported that Mexican marines in a joint operation with the DEA captured Guzman at a hotel in the beach resort of of Mazatlán. He was with a female.

CNN reported that Phil Jordan, who spent three decades with the DEA and headed the agency’s El Paso Intelligence Center, said the arrest represents a huge blow to the world’s most powerful drug boss.

“It is a significant arrest provided he gets extradited immediately to the United States,” Jordan told CNN. “If he does not get extradited, then he will be allowed to escape within a period of time.”
