FBI to Help Train 30,000 Officers to Handle Active Shooters in Public Places

The FBI plans to train 30,000 officers nationwide how to handle an active shooter in schools, businesses and other public places, the USA Today reports.

More than 200 agents are helping with the training, which was hatched after the 2012 Newton, Conn., school massacre.

“We have found a block of training that, in a short period of time, provides the best investment in saving lives,” FBI Deputy Director Mark Giuliano said.

The training, which is in partnership with Texas State University, is critical and aimed at shaving time to respond, identify and “eliminate” suspects.

“If we don’t get the initial response right, it’s always going to be a train wreck,” said Terry Nichols, assistant director of Texas State’s Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Center. “You have to stop the threat. That means urging first responding officers to move quickly toward the gunfire. That’s hard to do, even if you are a law enforcement officer.”

More people are opening fire on crowds with the intent of mass murder, Scripps News reports.

The disturbing trend was revealed, in part, by a Texas State University researcher exclusively retained by Scripps News.

According to the data, active shooter incidents have tripled in the past recent years.

“There is a higher number of people being shot and a higher number of people being killed,” said special agent Katherine Schweit, head of the FBI’s active shooter team which formed after last year’s rampage in Newtown.

What’s more, these incidents often go unnoticed outside of the communities where they occur, leaving the impression that they aren’t as common as they are, Scripps reported.

Gun Store That Sold Weapons Found at Scene of Newtown School Shooting Had Hundreds of Violations

The Connecticut gun store that sold two guns at the scene of the Newtown elementary school massacre had more than 500 violations of federal firearms regulations, reports the Journal News of Westchester County.

Still, the ATF allowed the store to stay open without yanking the license until after the shooting, the Journal News wrote.

That comes despite ATF allegations that the store was knowingly selling guns to felons, which is a federal crime.

ATF also found the store failed to properly keep records on gun sales and even entered the wrong serial numbers on some, according to the Journal News.
