A Georgia man under investigation after he was exposed to the deadly poison ricin has ties to a white supremacist group Creativity Movement, the Southern Poverty Law Center reports

The FBI is trying to determine how William Christopher Gibbs, 27, was exposed to ricin.

Gibbs was arrested on charges of reckless conduct and a probation violation after arriving at the local hospital late last week.

About 100 police and hazardous materials experts searched Gibbs’ car and home for traces of ricin in Fannin County.

“I think it was all contained inside his vehicle, just a small amount of something I think he had been experimenting with,” Fannin County Sheriff Dane Kirby told an Atlanta television station.

According to sheriff’s deputies, Gibbs’ mother said he has a mental illness.

The FBI has declined to comment, other than to confirm agents are investigating Gibbs’ background and how he acquired ricin.

The Creativity Movement is a white supremacy sect that says “race is our religion” and that the “white race is nature’s finest.”

The FBI is trying to determine how a Georgia man was exposed to the deadly toxin, ricin.

William Christopher Gibbs, 27, went to the hospital and said he had been exposed to ricin, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

On Feb. 2, Gibbs was arrested on suspicion on reckless conduct and citation of probation. According to a police report, Gibbs’ mother said her son has mental health issues, including schizophrenia.

“We have identified no evidence that any poisonous or toxic substances have been dispersed or that the public is at risk, and we are coordinating with the 4th Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team of the Army National Guard and the Cherokee County Fire Department to ensure that the area is safe,” US Attorney John Horn said in a statement.

Fannin County Sheriff Dane Kirby said Gibbs’ ricin was found in Gibbs’ car.

It’s unlikely that the exposure was accidental, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

“It would take a deliberate act to make ricin and use it to poison people,” the CDC website states. “Unintentional exposure to ricin is highly unlikely, except through the ingestion of castor beans.”

A 21-year-old college student in Wisconsin is accused of trying to make ricin, prompting the FBI and police to block off a four-block area Friday after finding a white substance, the Associated Press reports.

Authorities became concerned after professors at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh expressed concerns that the student was making the deadly toxin.

A professor told authorities that the student asked about extracting the toxin from castor beans. When told to ask a biology professor, the student allegedly said, “They are all interested in life and I am interested in, like, ending it,” according to the search warrant.

The substance was sent to the FBI’s lab for analysis.

The popular San Francisco media and political consultant who was arrested after federal authorities found bomb-making materials at his apartment bought toxins in the black market, reported SFIST.com.

Using a fake name, Ryan Chamberlain is accused of buying biological agents and lethal toxins from California and Florida. Those toxins include ricin, pure nicotine and abrin.

The abrin powder alone was powerful enough to kill hundreds of people but it would have required more extensive work to purify the substance.

Chamberlain has been ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation.

Defense: FBI’s Tests On Ricin Were Unreliable, Shouldn’t be Allowed in Court

An Ohio man charged with creating the deadly toxin ricin is arguing that the FBI’s tests on the white powder found in his home were faulty, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

The defense team for Jeff Boyd Levenderis, 65, argued during an evidentiary hearing Tuesday that the FBI’s findings were unreliable and should not be admissible in court.

At the ending of the hearing, which continues today, the judge is expected to decide whether the tests can be admitted in court, the Plain Dealer wrote.

The Tallmadge man has been in federal custody since January 2011.
