Trump Calls FBI ‘Disgraceful,’ Then Praises the Bureau at National Academy

President Donald Trump

President Trump heaped praise and insults on the FBI on Friday, sending very mixed signals about a bureau he earlier this month had claimed was “in tatters” and “the worst in history.”

Speaking to reporters before speaking at the FBI’s National Academy, Trump called the bureau “disgraceful.”

“It’s a shame what’s happened with the FBI,’’ the president told reporters. “We’re going to rebuild the FBI, it’ll be bigger and better than ever, but it is very sad when you look at those documents, and how they’ve done that is really, really disgraceful and you have a lot of very angry people that are seeing it.”

But while speaking to more than 200 law enforcement officers who graduated from the FBI’s National Academy, Trump said, “The President of the United States has your back, 100%.”

He added: “I have so many friends that are police officers, so many people in the FBI, these are great, great people. These are really heroes to all of us.”

Trump has been at odds with the FBI over an ongoing investigation into his campaign’s inner circle and Russia. Former FBI Director James Comey said he was fired by the president for refusing to stop an investigation into Trump’s ex-national security adviser Michael Flynn.

When asked Friday whether he would pardon Flynn, who recently pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI, Trump responded, “We’ll see.”

The FBI’s new director warned agents and others in federal government to resist pressure to act unethically.

“At some point for everybody in this room and everybody in my organization, our integrity will be tested,” Christopher Wray told a Washington audience of investigators who work for federal government inspectors general, Politico reports. “It happens to everybody. It happens to all of us. It could be at a time where we’re being asked to make a decision that is inconsistent with what we know is right and what we know is true, where we’ll be asked to do something without fully thinking it through.”

Wray offered no details of the ethical challenges he expects to face, but he urged internal government watchdogs to resist the pressure.

“It could be at a time we think no one will notice, no one will know,” the FBI chief said. “I would argue that actually those are the times where we need to stay most true to our core integrity and our professionalism. To think critically and thoughtfully and to do what’s right, not just for ourselves individually so we can look ourselves in the mirror as leaders, but for our agencies and the government and the public that we all serve.”

FBI Director Comey Says Lack of Diversity Among Agents Is ‘a Crisis’

FBI Director James Comey said the bureau has “a crisis” because of the decline of minorities working for the bureau.

Speaking at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla., Comey said the FBI’s agents are 83% white, The Wall Street Journal reports.

“We have a crisis in the FBI and it is this: Slowly but steadily over the last decade or more, the percentage of special agents in the FBI who are white has been growing,’’ he said without saying why that occurred.

Comey’s comments come after high-profile shootings of black men by white police officers. Comey said he worries that the controversies around race and policing may prevent younger people from joining the FBI.

Secret Service agents rushed to protect Bernie Sanders on a stage for the second time in a week.

Sanders was delivering a speech Thursday in Modesto, Calif., when animal-rights protesters shouted at the senator and unfurled a black banner that read, “Animal Liberation is Social Justice.”

Two Secret Service agents jumped on the stage, and the protesters were escorted out.

Secret Service agents also rushed the stage on Monday when at least four people ran toward Sanders.

On Feb. 12, FBI Director James B. Comey made what will be remembered as a history-making speech at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

In the speech, “Hard Truths: Law Enforcement and Race,” Comey said, “With the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, the death of Eric Garner in Staten Island, the ongoing protests throughout the country, and the assassinations of NYPD Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, we are at a crossroads.”

He went on to say, “Serious debates are taking place about how law enforcement personnel relate to the communities they serve, about the appropriate use of force, and about real and perceived biases, both within and outside of law enforcement.”

The most important point Director Comey made was about unconscious discrimination. He explained that “Much research points to the widespread existence of unconscious bias. Many people in our white-majority culture have unconscious racial biases and react differently to a white face than a black face.” The research to which Comey referred consists of numerous studies conducted over the last 30 years that have shown that racial prejudice is pervasive among many who consciously subscribe to a belief in racial equality. Many individuals who believe they have positive attitudes about racial minorities harbor unconscious racial prejudices.

Prejudice and stereotypes are the byproducts of ordinary perceptions, categorization, learning, memory and judgment. “Categorization” is the process by which ideas and objects are recognized, differentiated and understood. It is an essential brain function that enables individuals to reduce the enormous amounts of information they encounter every day to a manageable level. Categorization allows individuals to relate new experiences to old experiences; the unfamiliar becomes familiar. Each object and event is perceived, remembered, grouped into a category and identified. The process is automatic and operates in milliseconds.

President Obama’s Immigration Plan Would Shield 5 Million People from Deportation

President Obama unveiled his plan to reshape the nation’s immigration system during a 15-minute address from the White House.

Tired of Congressional gridlock, Obama said he is issuing an executive order and all but challenged Republicans to come up with a different plan, the New York Times reports.

Under his plan, up to five million people will be shielded from deportation, but the president offered no path to citizenship.

“The actions I’m taking are not only lawful, they’re the kinds of actions taken by every single Republican president and every Democratic president for the past half-century,” Obama said. “To those members of Congress who question my authority to make our immigration system work better, or question the wisdom of me acting where Congress has failed, I have one answer: Pass a bill.”

President Obama is expected to spend the next several months convincing Americans that his plan is good and lawful. He’ll be speaking today at a high school in Las Vegas, where Hispanics have growing influence.

Republicans argue the president is abusing his office and pledged a Congressional battle.

President Obama to Unveil New Immigration Plan Tonight During Speech on TV

President Obama plans to reveal his plan today to overhaul the immigration system in what is likely to set off a contentious debate with Republicans, CNN reports.

Obama’s plan will involve new rules for deportations, a move that will have ramifications for millions of undocumented immigrants.

Obama is expected to announce the deferment of deportation for the parents of U.S. citizens.

“Everybody agrees that our immigration system is broken. Unfortunately, Washington has allowed the problem to fester for far too long,” Obama said in a video posted on his Facebook page Wednesday. “And so what I’m going to be laying out is the things that I can do with my lawful authority as President to make the system work better, even as I continue to work with Congress to encourage them to get a bipartisan, comprehensive bill that can solve the entire problem.”

Obama is taking action with an executive order, as opposed to waiting for Congress.

Obama will address the nation live during a speech at 8 p.m. tonight.
