Border Patrol Agent: ‘I Was Shot at by State Trooper’ in Texas

A Texas state trooper fired his weapon near a federal agent because of poor communication between the Border Patrol and Texas Department of Public Safety.

Records obtained by CBS 4 News raise questions about the Department of Public Safety’s decision to increase its presence at the border, even though many troopers aren’t familiar with the area and don’t speak Spanish.

“When you bring DPS officers from other parts of the state who aren’t really familiar with the border, it’s like going into a strange area or an unfamiliar area,” said state Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, D-McAllen. “You’re prone to be a lot more cautious and possibly make some mistakes.”

On June 21, a game warden and Border Patrol agent were monitoring the Rio Grande when they said a trooper shot in their direction.

“I was shot at by a trooper,” the Border Patrol agent said.

As relations between Cuba and the U.S. continue to improve, a big question lingers: Will the first woman on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists List be extradited to face life in prison in America?

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Assata Shakur, who was convicted of killing a New Jersey state trooper in 1973, may be extradited because of the improved relations.

Shakur was a member of the Black Liberation Army and the Black Panther Party and was welcomed into Cuba as a fellow socialist with asylum.

It remains unclear whether Cuba would turn over Shakur, but some legal experts said it’s unlikely since she was labeled a political refugee.

It’s still anyone’s guess why someone would ambush two Pennsylvania state troopers and then shoot them with a high-caliber rifle on Sept. 12.

One special agent with the FBI offered some insight into the suspect – 31-year-old Eric Matthew Frein.

Frein lived with his parents and likely was unsatisfied with life, said Ed Hanko, special agent in charge of the Philadelphia Division of the FBI. He played in military re-enactments and may have wanted to fulfill one of those roles.

“We want to arrest this person,”  Hanko said, adding later, “We have the who, the what, the where. We want the why.”

After the attack, Frein took cover in the woods and has been missing since.

The FBI’s newest addition to the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list is Eric Matthew Frein, who is the lone suspect in the delay ambush of two Pennsylvania state troopers, the Huffington Post reports.

The FBI said it’s not messing around.

“When law enforcement officers are violently targeted, we take it seriously — and personally,” Edward J. Hanko, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Philadelphia Division, said Thursday in a press release.

The ambush of Alex Douglass and Byron Dickson happened at 10:50 p.m. during a shift change. Dickson was killed, and Douglass remains hospitalized.

The 31-year-old suspect was charged Tuesday with homicide of a law enforcement officer.

Authorities warned that Frein is a weapons enthusiast and survivalist.

“All of law-enforcement is committed to apprehending Frein, and we are dedicated to making sure that the danger to the public ends with his arrest,” Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said Thursday.

A gun used by a felon to shoot and kill a state trooper in the state of Washington in February was traced to a gun show in 2009, the Associated Press reports.

The news comes from the ATF, which tracked the history of the .40-caliber Smith & Wesson.

The proper documentation was never filled out when the gun changed hands at least twice, according to the AP.

Joshua Blake shot and killed Trooper Tony Radulescu Feb. 23 and then fatally shot himself, the AP reported.
