Laptops Will Be Banned on Flights From 10 Airports From 8 Muslim-Majority Nations

Traveling to the U.S. just got more restrictive.

Passengers traveling to the U.S.  from 10 airports in eight Muslim-majority countries will no longer be aloud to bring laptops, tablets and other portable electronic devices on board, Lori Aratani of the Washington Post reports. The devices must now be packed in checked luggage.

The Post reports that senior U.S. administration officials said the rules were prompted by “evaluated intelligence” that terrorists continue to target commercial aviation by “smuggling explosives in portable electronic devices.”

“Based on this information, Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly and Transportation Security Administration acting administrator Huban Gowadia have determined it is necessary to enhance security procedures for passengers at certain last-point-of-departure airports to the United States,” officials said late Monday, according to the Post story.

While President Trump focuses on security at the U.S.-Mexico border, he may want to shift his focus to the northern border with Canada.

The Daily Beast reports that “far more suspected terrorists try to enter the country from the northern border with Canada than from the south.”

The media outlet analyzed monthly domestic encounter reports from the FBI Terrorist Screening Center, which details encounters with terrorists.

“We are looking the wrong direction,” said a senior DHS official familiar with the data. “Not to say that Mexico isn’t a problem, but the real bad guys aren’t coming from there—at least not yet.”

President Trump has claimed that jihadis are “pouring” into the country, but White House press secretary Sean Spicer declined to disclose any evidence.

FBI data shows there is more urgency at the northern border with Canada.

“We often hear about security concerns on the Southern border, but bad actors intent on entering our country will always seek the path of least resistance, so we must have the necessary tools and resources to secure both the northern and southern borders,” Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) said in a statement to The Daily Beast.

The FBI provided the tip that led Brazil to arrest 11 suspected militants accused of plotting a possible terrorist attack in the upcoming Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazilian prosecutor Rafael Brum Miron said the FBI identified at least six people suspected of being militants, Reuters reports.

“The information came from the FBI,” he told the Estado de S. Paulo newspaper. “They sent a succinct report: These people merit investigating.”

The FBI declined to comment.

The suspected were arrested Thursday, just two weeks before the Olympics are scheduled to begin.

Brazil’s justice justice minister called the suspects “absolutely amateur” and said they have no formal ties to ISIS but have pledged allegiance to the terror group.

CIA Director Says U.S. Knew ISIS Was Planning Attack on France Days Before Attack

CIA Director John Brennan said U.S. intelligence knew ISIS was planning an attack “just in the days before” terrorists killed 130 people in a series of mass shootings.

In an interview on 60 Minutes, which was aired Sunday, Brennan said his agents were thwarted by the “sophisticated” use of encrypted Internet communication.

“We knew the system was blinking red,” Brennan said “We knew just in the days before that ISIL was trying to carry out something. But the individuals involved have been able to take advantage of the newly available means of communication that are walled off from law enforcement officials.”

Brennan said his agents have to “work harder” to prevent similar attacks.

“We need to have the capabilities, the technical capabilities, the human sources,” Brennan said.

“Believe me, intelligence security services have stopped numerous attacks, operatives that have been moved from maybe the Iraq to Syria theater into Europe,” he added. “They have been stopped and interdicted and arrested and detained and debriefed because of very, very good intelligence.”

Federal investigators are trying to determine whether recent attacks on the fiber optic systems in California are tied to a “more complex plot” against the Super Bowl in the San Francisco area.

Internal memos between the FBI and Homeland Security show that intelligence analysts are worried about a series of unsolved incidents in which fiber optic cables were deliberately severed in the Bay Area, NBC reports.

The memo detailed risks that include the fiber optic system, drones and attacks in crowded areas outside of Levi’s Stadium.

Still, the memo read, “The FBI and DHS have no information to indicate any specific, credible threats to or associated with Super Bowl 50 or related events.”

The memo also warned that attacks by an individual – as opposed to a larger terrorist group – “are of particular concern.”

Between July 2014 and June 2014, at least 10 fiber optic cables were deliberately severed in areas relatively close to the stadium.

FBI Tries to Fill in 18-Minute Gap Between San Bernardino Shooting And Police Pursuit

The FBI is trying to figure out what the San Bernardino couple did in the 18 months after killing 14 people at a holiday party.

The Boston Herald reports that the FBI is seeking the public’s help in filling in the gap, which could be critical to understanding whether the couple was in contact with anyone else after the massacre.

So far, the FBI has found no evidence that the husband-and-wife terrorist team intended to strike another target.

Federal investigators also want to now whether Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 29, contacted anyone or stopped anywhere between the attack and the police pursuit.

“It’s possible that they stopped, whether it be a storage area, a residence, a business. It’s possible there was a contact made. We just don’t know,” David Bowdich, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, said. “It very well may not be an important fact, but until we close that gap we just don’t know for sure.”

FBI: No Evidence That San Bernardino Couple Was Part of Terrorist Cell

The FBI has found no evidence so far that the San Bernardino couple that killed 14 people during a holiday party massacre were part of a terrorist cell, The Huffington Post reports.

Investigators, however, believe the couple was inspired by ISIS, but received no orders or directions from the terrorist group.

ISIS has “revolutionized” terrorism by using social media, encrypted messages and propaganda to inspire small-scale attacks.

“Your parents’ al Qaeda was a very different model than the threat we face today,” Comey told a counterterrorism conference in New York.

Updated: Washington Post Reports That Story About Escaped Mexican Drug Lord ‘El Chapo’ Threatening to ‘Destroy’ ISIS Is a Hoax

Updated: Monday, 11:37 a.m. — The Washington Post reports that a number of publications including Forbes, New York Post and Fox News Latino, were duped when it reported that escaped Mexican Drug Lord  Drug Lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman had fired off an angry email to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The paper reports that the story started as joke and apparently spun out of control. Ticklethewire.com reported the story, using information from Forbes.

The paper reported:

Most English-language accounts of the story trace its origins to Cartel Blog, a small publication which published a report detailing Guzmán’s alleged email to Baghdadi on Monday. “It turns out a Mexican blogger leaked the message after it was sent email encrypted directly to the Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, a prominent ISIS leader,” the unnamed author of the post writes. “The blogger has intimate ties with actual Sinaloa cartel members, so it looks as if the warning is indeed legit.”

The Post goes on to report:

However, it appears that the email appeared first on an American website called Thug Life Videos on Nov. 30, a website that publishes a mixture of music videos, news and satire. The story is quite clearly the latter. “We write funny ‘satire’ stories occasionally which we assume are taken as jokes, and generally they are,” Steve Charnock, a writer for Thug Life Videos, told Snopes.com. “Maybe I didn’t make this El Chapo story funny or weird enough, though. Or I just have an uncanny ability to ape how Mexican drug cartel kingpins talk.”

It sounds like the plot of an action-packed movie: An escaped Mexican drug lord is threatening to take on the world’s most hated terrorists.

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the escaped boss of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, has threatened to eliminate ISIS for destroying drug shipments to Middle East countries, Forbes reports.

Guzman reportedly sent a harshly-worded email to the head of ISIS, Abu Bakd Badhdadi, threatening to wipe out the terrorist group.

“My men will destroy you. The world is not yours to dictate. I pity the next son of a whore who tries to interfere with the business of the Sinaloa Cartel. I will have their  heart and tongue torn from them.”

He added: “You [ISIS] are not soldiers. You are nothing but lowly p *ssies. Your god cannot save you from the true terror that my men will levy at you if you continue to impact my operation.”

Federal investigators have not yet been able to authenticate the threat.

“I don’t have any information to weigh in either way,” DEA spokesperson Rusty Payne told Forbes.

ISIS is opposed to drug use and reportedly has destroyed shipments wending their way through Iraq and Syria.
