Something had to be done in Trenton.

That much was clear less than three months into Mayor Tony Mack’s administration when a government informant told the FBI that he feared the mob had taken over city hall, the Trenton Times reports.

FBI Supervisor Special Agent Mike Doyle was listening into a conversation between the informant and city hall insider Joseph “JoJo” Giorgianni.

The surveillance prompted deep concerns that the Mack administration could potentially extort millions from city taxpayers, the Trenton Times wrote.

“Based on the allegations that Mr. Giorgianni made during those … initial meetings, I was fearful that an organized criminal element had taken over City Hall,” Doyle said. “And if so, I believe the cost to the taxpayers would be in the multi-million dollars as part of a criminal arrangement that had been inherent in the city.”

“That is the reason we had such a robust investigation,” said Doyle, who is a 17-year veteran of the FBI and was the lead agent on the case.

The FBI rushed its investigation into Trenton Mayor Tony Mack because agents were worried the administration knew about the probe, the Trenton Times reports

A city carpet salesman, who was Mack’s fraternity brother, warned the mayor of an investigation, prompting the FBI to scurry for search warrants.

“We needed to execute immediately because we believed we were compromised in the investigation,” FBI Supervisory Special Agent Mike Doyle said.

Mack and his brother are accused of accepting bribes in exchange for fast-tracking the sale of property to build a garage, which actually was an FBI sting operation.

FBI Special Agent Michael Doyle is becoming somewhat of a celebrity in New Jersey.

The 17-year-veteran of tackling white collar crime and political corruption cases may best be known for bringing down the once-powerful Newark Mayor Sharpe James, who served 18 months in prison on corruption charges.

The Trentonian is reporting that Doyle also led the two-year investigation that prompted similar charges against Trenton Mayor Tony F. Mack.

Doyle is expected to take the stand for the third day today in the Mack case to explain how he nabbed the mayor.

Just days after Joseph “JoJo” Giorgianni took a plea deal and implicated the Trenton Mayor Tony Mack in a corruption scheme, professionally looking signs began popping up that displayed “JoJo” and a rat, NJ.com reports.

The FBI is taking the signs seriously.

“It’s more than crazy, it’s a serious crime,” Giorgianni’s attorney, Jerome Ballarotto said. “And Hamilton Township police doesn’t think it’s funny, and neither does the FBI.”

Giorgianni was arrested along with Mack and his brother Ralphiel in January.

The FBI was listening to Trenton Mayor Tony Mack’s cell phone calls for nearly six months under the authority of a court.

But that authorization ended two days after agents raided Mack’s home last summer, the NJ.com reports.

Government records now suggest agents continued to tap Mack’s phone, raising major questions surrounding the handling of the probe of the mayor of New Jersey’s capital city.

NJ.com wrote that defense attorneys are likely to challenges any warrantless wiretappings.

“It will come out at the time of motions,” said Jerome Ballarotto, a lawyer for Mack’s co-defendant Joseph “JoJo” Giorgianni.
