They were packed inside a sweltering, pitch-black tractor-trailer, taking turns breathing from a small hole in the semi. The immigrants had no water and banged on the walls of the trailer in vain.

Then they started dying.

James Matthew Bradley Jr., the 60-year-old driver of the tractor-trailer, told authorities Monday he had no idea there was anyone in the truck until he arrived at a Walmart in San Antonio on early Sunday morning. When he opened the door to the trailer, he said “he was run over by ’Spanish’ people and knocked to the ground,” the complaint reads, according to CNN

The Florida man said bodies were “lying on the floor like meat.”

Ten people died. More than a dozen more were in life-threatening condition.

If convicted, Bradley could be sentenced to death on one count of transporting illegal immigrants for financial gain, resulting in death.

Border Patrol agents made a surprising discovery inside a tractor-trailer at a checkpoint in Salton City, Calif., on Monday.

Thirty illegal immigrants were hidden inside at the Highway 86 checkpoint, NBC7 San Diego reports.

The immigrants were locked inside the trailer from the outside, posing a significant danger to the 30 people, all of whom are Mexican citizens.

Earlier this month, Border Patrol agents found 19 illegal immigrants inside a tractor-trailer on the same highway. All but one was a Mexican citizen. They also were locked from the outside.

DEA Does Not Owe Company Money for Using Truck without Permission

A judge has ruled that the DEA is not required to compensate a Texas trucking company for damaging a tractor trailer that the agency used during a wild 2011 sting without permission.

The Washington Post reports that the tractor trailer was riddled with bullets after the sting ended in the execution-style murder of the truck’s driver, an informant.

The ruling essentially prevents more information from being disclosed about the incident.

The owner of the trucking company also is worried that his business is in danger of being retaliated against by the drug cartel that encountered the truck.
