Rev. Sharpton: FBI Director Was Wrong to Suggest Public Stop Recording Police

camera policeBy Rev. Al Sharpton
for Huffington Post

Last week a federal grand jury indicted officer Michael Slager, who shot and killed Walter Scott in South Carolina, on several charges including violating civil rights laws. During that same week, FBI director James Comey came out with more shocking statements claiming videos are somehow stifling police officers from doing their job and may lead to homicide rates and crime increasing. If Walter Scott’s tragic death were not caught on videotape, officer Slager likely would have never been charged and his family may have never known the truth. Reducing crime and keeping communities safe is what we all want, but if we are to ever separate good cops from the bad ones and reform policing in this country, we must push for more videotaped evidence and transparency (as a start), and not blame videos. New technology should be embraced instead of scapegoated.

While homicide rates have increased in certain places, in cities like New York and many others, they have gone down. There is no conclusive evidence as to what is either causing or decreasing these rates, and definitely no evidence of a so-called ‘Ferguson effect’. For the director of the FBI to even insinuate that such a thing exists is irresponsible, dangerous and unacceptable. Secondly, videotaping police misconduct is adding to the enforcement of law, not taking away from it because police misconduct is in fact a crime. How can anyone say that citizens should not videotape crime and it be used against alleged criminals? When security and surveillance cameras are everywhere in order to catch the bad guys, we should utilize cell phone videos to do the same – even if those bad guys happen to be wearing a police uniform.

Remaining Occupiers of Oregon Wildlife Refuge Taunt FBI in Videos

By Steve Neavling

The five-week standoff at an Oregon wildlife refuge took a bizarre turn after one of the four remaining occupier released a video taunting the FBI.

In one video, David Fry, a 27-year-old dental assistant from Cincinnati takes a joy ride in a U.S. government vehicle, challenging the feds to charge him with theft, The Washington Post reports.

“You see this? It’s a U.S. government vehicle,” he says, filming himself getting into a pickup truck with federal plates. “I think I want to take it on a little joy ride. You know? Yeah. Let’s start this baby up. Now you’ve got another charge on me, FBI. I am driving your vehicle.”

In another video, husband-and-wife due, Sean and Sandy Anderson, claim they are “hostages” for missing a deadline to leave the refuge unscathed.

“Here we sit as hostages because we didn’t hear about a deal that everyone else got to leave,” Sean Anderson says in the video. “They either let us go, drop all charges because we’re good people, or they come in and kill us. How’s that going to sit with America?”

Motorists Defy Border Patrol Orders While Video-Recording Confrontation

Motorists are increasingly using cameras to defy Border Control questions and orders.

The footage of motorists refusing to answer questions on American roads are posted on YouTube and are popular on social media.

The overwhelming majority of people don’t seem to care and perhaps see cooperating as their duty in keeping the nation guarded,” The Houston Chronicle reports. “But a small, and apparently growing, number of people say they should not have to answer any such questions from armed federal agents, and they also refuse to consent to searches of their vehicles. They say that people should not so willingly give up their rights.

There is no telling how many times a day agents and civilians clash over the issue or what most often happens next. But many dozens, if not hundreds of videos are posted on  YouTube by travelers who recorded their moments of truth. Some of the time agents just wave through travelers who said they were exercising their right not to answer any questions. In other instances standoffs ensue in which motorists are forcibly yanked from their vehicles.”

Woman Who Says She Was a ‘Sex Slave’ for Prince Andrew, Others Says Videos Exist

The woman at the center of the Prince Andrew “sex slave” scandal said she believes the FBI has video of her having sex with billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein and “some of his powerful friends,” the Independent reports.

Virginia Roberts, now 31, said in sworn statements in court last week that she believes  “maintained videos in some rooms where I had sex with other powerful people” and that “some kind of major cover-up is going on to protect.”

Roberts claims she was only 17 when Epstein and his friends turned her into a “sex slave.”

One of the friends of Epstein that Roberts said she had sex with is Prince Andrew.

Prince Andrew has denied the allegations.
