A Homeland Security police officer is accused of killing his estranged wife and two others during a two-day rampage of violence.

Eulalio “Leo” Tordil, 62, was arrested Friday afternoon and is charged with first-degree murder and related charges.

The Washington Post reports that the Federal Protection Service stripped Tordil of his gun and badge in March after his wife was granted a protective order. She said her husband “threatened to harm me if I leave.”

The incident allegedly provoked the rampage in Maryland. Tordil is accused of shooting his wife and four seeming strangers. His wife and two of the others died.

A former FBI special agent and his wife have been charged in Richmond, Va. federal court in a $1.3 million investment fraud scheme, the Justice Department announced Wednesday.

Ex-agent John Robert Graves, 52, and Sara Turberville Graves, 44, both of Fredericksburg, Va., are charged with multiple counts.

Authorities said that Graves founded Brook Point Management (BPM) in 2003, a company that sold insurance, performed estate and tax planning services and recruited and advised investment clients.

The indictment alleges that between June 2008 and July 2011, John Graves, Sara Graves, and others schemed to defraud approximately 11 investors in central Virginia of approximately $1.3 million.

Authorities alleged that the couple raised investor funds by misrepresenting “the safety and security of the investments, as well as misrepresentations and omissions regarding their use of investor money.”

Authorities alleged that the two used the investor funds to pay back previous investors who requested access to their money; purchase real estate in Partlow, Va.; and pay personal expenses, including credit card bills and time share dues. Authorities alleged that even after the scheme was uncovered, John Graves continued to make misrepresentations through false and misleading statements to the investors and to investigators from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

The ex-FBI agent accused of threatening to kill his estranged wife and the head of the Dallas FBI should have been dismissed 18 years ago after he was involved in a seven-hour standoff with the SWAT team, the former head of the office told the Dallas Morning News.

Oliver “Buck” Revell, the former special agent in charge of the Dallas office, told the paper that he recommended firing agent Carlos Ortiz, but his superiors in Washington rejected it, pointing out that psychiatrists had deemed him fit for duty.

Ortiz had barricaded himself in his home over “job stress and personal issues,” the Dallas Morning News reported.

“They came back and said it was stress induced, and as soon as it was dealt with, he would be just fine,” Revell told the paper. “My recommendation to headquarters was unequivocal that this man was not qualified to be an agent or carry a weapon and I want him out of my office. They said, ‘Well that would be a discriminatory action.’ ”

A magistrate judge ruled that Ortiz was a danger to society and ordered him held in jail pending his trial on federal charges of threatening to kill his estranged wife, who is an FBI analyst, and the head of the Dallas FBI.

In every passing week, the level of disgust in the Bernie Madoff case rises.

By Reuters
BOSTON/NEW YORK – The wife of Bernard Madoff withdrew more than $15 million from an account linked to the accused swindler in the days before his arrest, Massachusetts authorities said on Wednesday, adding a new layer of intrigue to the probe of the purported $50 billion scam.
Ruth Madoff pulled out $10 million on December 10, the day before her husband was arrested and charged with running a global investment fraud, and $5.5 million on November 25, according to Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin.
The disclosure came in reports produced by Cohmad Securities Corp, a firm co-owned by Bernard Madoff that funneled millions of dollars from its clients to the financier. Galvin’s office filed a court complaint trying to suspend Cohmad’s license as a broker in Massachusetts.
