Two illegal immigrants from Mexico have been charged in the shooting death of an off-duty Border Patrol agent while he was on vacation with his family in Texas, Fox News reports.

The defendants have been arrested and deported several times in the past.

They are Gustavo Tijerina, 30, and Ismael Hernandez, 40. After being arraigned Tuesday inside the Willacy County jail library, the men were ordered held without bond. They have been charged with capital murder of a peace officer, attempted murder and other lesser charges.

The pair were living in Texas illegally when Border Patrol Agent Javier Vega Jr. was with his family fishing in Santa Monica.

The men confessed to the robbery and other crimes, Fox News reported.

“They claim to have been involved in other incidents, this means you’ve got stolen vehicles going into Mexico,” Santa Monica, Sheriff Larry Spence said. “Everything is going to be cartel-related, there’s a connection somehow.”
