Washington D.C. Police Chief Robert J. Contee III has been named assistant director of the FBI’s Office of Partner Engagement.
Contee will be tasked with building relationships between the bureau, federal agencies, and local and state law enforcement agencies.
Contee’s last day as police chief is June 3.
Contee has served with the department for 30 years.
A native of Washington D.C., Contee began working for the department as a cadet in 1989 before becoming a sworn police officer three years later. He served in numerous districts and led several different programs, squads, and branches.
In 2004, Contee was promoted to captain and led the Violent Crimes Branch, including the Homicide Branch and the Sexual Assault Unit. Later that year, Contee was promoted to commander of the Second District.
In 2017, he served as patrol chief of Patrol Services South.
Contee was named assistant chief of the Investigative Services Bureau in 2018.
The mayor appointed him as police chief in late 2020, when he served in an acting role until his confirmation in May 2021.
Contee received a bachelor’s degree in professional studies with a concentration in police science from George Washington University.
