The U.S. attorney for Massachusetts, Rachael S. Rollins, resigned Friday after an internal investigation found that she had misused her office to help an ally in a political campaign and then lied under oath to investigators.
The 161-page report from Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz also alleges Rollins flouted ethics rules to get free Boston Celtics tickets, discredited a political rival, leaked information to the media, and accepted flights and a stay at a resort that were paid by a sports and entertainment company.
The impetus of the investigation was a published report about Rollins attending a July 2022 Democratic National Committee fundraiser headlined by Jill Biden, the first lady, The New York Times reports.
The U.S. Office of Special Counsel also released the findings of its investigation of Rollins, alleging she violated the Hatch Act, which restricts political activity by federal officials.
The special counsel, Henry Kerner, said in a letter to President Biden that the violations were among “the most egregious transgressions” he had ever investigated.
Rollins was appointed by Biden and served 16 months.
