An IRS whistleblower tells CBS News that the Justice Department “slow-walked” parts of the criminal investigation into Hunter Biden.
Gary Shapley, a 14-year veteran of the agency, did not mention Hunter Biden’s name, but CBS confirms that’s the case he’s speaking of. Shapley is a supervisory special agent who oversees a team of 12 agents specializing in international tax and financial crimes.
“There were multiple steps that were slow-walked — were just completely not done — at the direction of the Department of Justice,” Shapley tells CBS chief investigative correspondent Jim Axelrod. “When I took control of this particular investigation, I immediately saw deviations from the normal process. It was way outside the norm of what I’ve experienced in the past.”
Shapley tells CBS News that he became concerned about steps taken to shield Hunter Biden.
“Each and every time, it seemed to always benefit the subject,” Shapley said. “It just got to that point where that switch was turned on. And I just couldn’t silence my conscience anymore.”
The Delaware U.S. Attorney, appointed by President Trump, is focusing on tax debt Biden may owe from his days on the board of a Ukrainian energy firm while Joe Biden was vice president. The probe also includes allegations that Hunter Biden may have made a false statement relating to a gun purchase.
Attorney General Merrick Garland has vowed publicly not to interfere with the investigation.
